I'm curious, with the advent of Apple/Android pay and the wide use of cards, how many of us actually use a wallet anymore?
I know I haven't use a traditional wallet in years. I have a card holder (pictured below), and if I need to carry cash, which is rare, I have a money clip.

I only ever need 3 cards, so this is perfect.

I have a few friends that have super fat wallets and seem to carry everything in them, and a couple others that have gone over to Apple pay entirely, carrying no cash or cards at all.

So, what do you guys use?

Normal wallet. I wish I could switch to my phone only, but sadly, Belgium isn't a country of fast change. I need my wallet for my:

  • paper 10-way train ticket (~1$ bill size)
  • IDcard
  • driver's lisence
  • bank card 1
  • bank card 2
  • student id
  • cash cuz stupid cafes/restaurants dont accept card
  • ...

As you can see, there's a bunch of stuff I need to carry. With a little bit of work, I could maybe get away with a card holder, but that requires more effort than a traditional wallet.

I've already made my wallet like 1/3 of the thickness it was by completely switching to my phone for carrying loyalty cards (sadly not all shops can scan a screen. Kinda wish I had that Russian ebook-phone thing with dual displays)

On the positive side of things, I just got my new bank card today (wanted a new picture, I get 2 pictures/year free), and I'm seeing an NFC logo on it, meaning it supports wireless payments. I wonder if there's an update allowing the same functionality using my bank's app.

I've also noticed Lidl (German, more expensive Aldi) is supporting mobile payments (NFC) but I wonder if it's only for bank cards or everything.

RuneScape is still the best MMO ever made.

I have a traditional wallet, it has a minimal amount of cash money in it and some cards in it.

I use a wallet with a bunch of cards in it, including my driver's license, and my social security card. I carry no physical money except for what I occasionally get from people. The last amount of money I had in my wallet was two dollars.

Why do you carry your social security card around with you?

I always thought that was best left in a safe place.

Haha, change is the worst! Hopefully most places slowly get rid of it.

I actually stopped using a regular wallet here recently. I used to use a triple fold wallet and after almost 6 years with it, i decided not only was i tired of having a large wallet in my pocket, I wanted one that would protect the one or two cards I have with NFC, so I switched to this. It's significantly smaller and works great. Granted there isn't a lot of room for much cash or receipts once you have your stuff in it, but I don't use cash that much anymore.

I still use a wallet.

1- Too many stores don't even support NFC contactless payment in the first place, let alone phone payment.

2- Other cards like health Insurance, drivers license, SSN, etc... cannot be put in a "phone wallet", you need the physical health insurance card to check-in a doctor's office here for example and I doubt they will start taking screenshots instead of actual physical card.

3- Losing phone = lose your wallet and phone? That's just hell.

4- Simply taking my NFC contactless enabled credit card and touching a NFC contactless enabled terminal to pay is much quicker than taking my phone, opening it up, launching the wallet app, putting my passcode, and then touching the terminal.

i actually still use a wallet, for my driver's license, school id, library card, 6 gift cards, and 3 game cards for my local arcade, plus about 30 bucks in cash (currently no phone for mobile pay, and no debit card/credit card). but really, i need a new wallet, since a couple friends of mine thought it was smart to duck tape it together while i was out running at practice.

Yeah, the one I have is similar! I think it's just quite a bit smaller (but of course holds less).

Cash is pretty much dead up here. Very rarely used.

Receipts is an interesting one but I find most of them are useless. I only keep receipts for groceries (so we can divy up the costs), and big purchases like electronics and clothes. Though those are mostly online anyway.

An interesting piece of info, if you use cash in the US, it can be used as a reason to watch you. It's considered a questionable act.

How do you find Android pay? Pretty useful? I don't think too many places accept it up here yet so I haven't bothered looking into it.

You're not supposed to carry your SSN though, I believe ;)
They haven't combined your health card into your drivers license? They have here. Though I guess you have tons of different providers.

Haha, kind of. It's not like the things are gone forever, I'd almost consider it safer, since you don't have to cancel your cards.

It would be a pain in the brief time you're without though.

Ahh you have it set up like that? My friend that uses his simply has to press I think two things. Just as fast as a wallet.

It's not bad, I was going to also use Samsung pay since I have a Galaxy S6. Though I didn't want to deal with calling my bank again to activate it which I was moderately disappointed that you have to call your bank to activate Android Pay.

Not too many places accept it here in Minnesota either. I mean there are some places. Like some Gas stations, fast food restaurants and Best Buy but that's pretty much it. There might be a few grocery stores that take Android pay too.

Though I use a case on my phone so it seems that some terminals have an issue detecting my phone's NFC so I have to take the case off. Which I do use a thicker case, an Otterbox Commuter. That's besides the point though. It's not bad and it sometimes asks me to validate with a finger print

Frankly, I don't see my cards being replaced by something that is bigger, heavier, and more fragile any time soon.

Plus I don't carry my phone around all the time, so it has to be some form of wallet or another. At this point, a traditional one is what works best for me.

You're required by law to carry your electronic ID everywhere, as for the drivers license, you're required to have it when driving, so I just have it permanently in my wallet.

As far as bank cards go, one's a Maestro (just a normal bank card bound to my bank account, idk if murica has that. I guess you'd call it debit?) and the other is a (debit) MasterCard for online purchases (debit as in I have to transfer money onto it before I can use it for purchases.)
