The next iPad Pro could make your current iPad Pro feel slow, old and busted

You've never worked in a corporate environment then? Almost no one uses Surface or Thinkpad devices whereas iPads are very common. Surfaces are getting more common but they kind of suck in tablet mode since they're shoehorning windows apps into a touch environment and you end up with the worst of both worlds. The 12.9" iPad Pro is not something I see a lot of (I have one but it's too large to fit in the seat back pocket of a  small plane) but the 10" is everywhere. My PA uses an iPad to manage my life. I use an iPad to watch TV shows.

 

People have the perception that corporate users need a lot of performance. What do you think we do all day? Nearly all of it is content consumption - reading emails and reports, managing appointments, watching presentations, taking notes and making calls. Occasionally typing aforementioned reports and editing a spreadsheet - though most of that is done on a desktop. Priority número uno is something thats light and portable so it can be used wherever and it doesn't drag you down. Big problem with a lot of laptops is you have to have a bag which is heavy and it's cumbersome to quickly get the laptop out and then you can't really pass it around to show people stuff and not to mention you can't use them on a plane during taxi and takeoff. 

 

"Pro" does not necessarily mean things like programming or video editing, which are specialised tasks that aren't things most people do in the professional world.

 

That said, I've seen the iPad Pro 12.9" and pencil combo replace a lot of illustrators workstations - usually a  multi-touch sensitive, colour-calibrated illustrator's monitor is about $3k and the iPad Pro plus a pencil is about half the price and gives a superior result since its much easier to adjust position and draw naturally.

 

While they aren't tools for everything, and peoples personal preferences differ, tablets (most of them iPads) have a HUGE presence in the corporate world and there isn't another device category that allows for such interactivity - which isn't really a quantifiable metric but is very important.

Still using my ipad second gen and it does just fine for browsing the web and watchingp youtube in bed

fun fact: the ipad air got destroyed going from ios 7.1.2 to ios 8 and higher

 

i mean, ios 7 had 60 fps animations and ios 8.3 had.. cinematic 24 fps

on a fucking ipad air, one year old.

Our IT department is now considering to ban Android phones and tablets from connecting to company files and Exchange emails because of the slow and lousy critical over-the-air updates of most Android OEMs not to mention most Android devices still lags and stutters. To be honest, most people conflate lagging and stuttering.

I am a teacher using an iPad Pro in my daily teaching, and I use it for more than my MacBook Air or iMac. I am not old, nor am I a kid, and I sure as hell am sure I am not mentally challenged.

honestly, if iOS werent so damn "unfriendly" to 3rd party software, ipads would be used a lot more. Hardware wise, they are some of the best tablets. BUT, software wise they are outright the worst.

@Dredgy That is highly dependent on the infrastructure of a company. EX my company uses applications that simply do not exist in iOS and are very basic on android. So most of our staff that needs a tablet has  surface. And this is true of any IT inclined company that did not jump the gun and went all in when ipads hit their peek.

 

As for the topic: Unless it can run x86 applications I dont find tablets useful at all.

after the OG Galaxy Tab and the OG iPad Mini, i'm done with tablets as a whole. Wake me up when the next fab starts (smartwatches are also DOA to me).

Tablet is a class of device. The iPad is a tablet, just a different brand. Much like the iMac, Macbook, and Mac Pro are PCs.

I really don't understand why people like touch screens on laptops/desktops. Literally the only time I want a touch screen is when I'm using my SP3 in laptop mode since the touchpad is shit.

The touchscreen is more of a crutch for shitty click pads (or those doing design/art). Example: My Asus U38N has an utterly terrible click pad (it actually resists when you try to drag your fingers over it, very inaccurate, none of the supposed multi touch gestures work), while its touchscreen (Wacom) is awesome, and makes navigating easy. While on this Pavilion DV6 3010AX the click pad is awesome, with excellent sensitivity, a smooth surface that my fingers glide over, I can use all gestures and it also has palm recognition (I never have any problems while typing).

And let's be honest, a touchscreen LAPTOP isn't good for design/art either. I really would like to know what it is that people actually use/want touchscreens for on their laptops, since as far as I'm concerned -- like you said -- it's merely a so-so substitute for a shitty trackpad. Never once have I had the urge/want/need to touch the screen on my mac, yet I'm constantly using it on my SP3 (when in laptop mode).

Some of them actually are. My Mum's current touchscreen laptop, and her old one (which my sister has now) both allow you to rotate the screen around, and fold it down to use it as a tablet. And since my sister's laptop also has a pen as well (it has its own storage slot, just like current Samsung devices with the S pen), she can use it for art-far easier as well than her Transformer Infinity TF700

I'd consider those convertibles/2-in-1's more than I would a laptop. Remember people keep advocating the need for touchscreens (on macbooks), but there's zero chance that all macbooks will become convertibles. So in the standard laptop form, a touch screen is worthless for design (and that standard design also accounts for the majority of laptops with touchscreens).

 

To be clear, I fully understand touchscreens on convertibles/2-in-1's. It allows the device to work like a tablet or a laptop.

I think not having a keyboard and the only keyboards being bluetooth destroy the productivity side of it for me.
