The End of OS X

Apple has finally released their successor to their long-standing OS X series of operating systems. While this probably won't have any impact on the vast majority of the community here, I see it as the end of an era, and the ushering of a new age. Perhaps Apple will take a new direction with the company. Probably not, but who knows!

 

Anyway, the new OS will include an updated version of the desktop Siri. " Other new Sierra features include improved file syncing with iCloud, new tools for storage management, and updates to core Apple apps including Photos (hello facial recognition albums!) and Safari (now with Apple Pay!) " (The Verge). Many of the updated features are also included in iOS 10, so many iPhone users (again, not the majority of this community) will be seeing parallels.

OSX went ages ago. It's MacOS now. Why is this the end of MacOS?

frankly i'm scared to download it. El Capitan and Yosemite have been complete shit on my 2012 MBP compared to when it had Mountain Lion and Mavericks 

One day I will be able to play Monster Hunter Frontier in French/Italian/English on my PC, it's just a matter of time... 4 5 6 7 8 9 years later: It's finally coming!!!

As someone pointed out, MacOS Sierra is version 10.12. New name, still technically the same as it was before.

That's not exactly true. It's useful if you don't want to store cc information on some sites. And frankly, I trust apple with my cc information a lot more than I do a dozen retailers.

I see i go to just 2-3 sites for everything so it didnt effect me that much but i can see how it would help other people who shop a large number of sites. I just gt frustrated at a school mac thats not reading my exteranal hard drive correctly so im a bit bias rigt now

OSX doesn't have native support for NTFS drives (if that happens to be the file system on the drive).

frankly i agree. Apple pay is a welcome addition as i have used Blur in the past for on the fly prepaid CC vendor. I enjoy using Google pay for the same reasons. Online transactions have become a bit of a gamble. the older you get, the more wealth you accumulate... the higher the stakes seem to become. when i was 18, i was elated to see a bank statement come in at anything higher than $500. True today if i lost $500 due to credit card fraud it wouldn't be unfelt, but it would not be crippling. $5000... well now you're talking.

My daily driver is a mac book pro 2011. These new features mean almost nothing to me. I only update so that my applications dont complain...

Updating it right now, 2014 i5 13" MBP.

Seems all going good so far here, but you have to keep in mind that anything 4+ year older is probably internally considered obsolete by Apple and receive minimal updates and support.

I wouldnt be suprised if things in the next year or so would stop working well for your machine :(

My 2007 MBP handled Mavericks just fine. It wasn't until Yosemite (2014) that I noticed it getting a bit slow, and I never bothered testing after that. So I'd say 4+ years is overly critical.

Apple makes it run worse or doesn't optimize it at all on their older hardware making you upgrade. If you put windows on it you will get soooo much more performance. I went from 720p CSGO at 40FPS on the latest mac version on my 2008 MBP, to 1080P 77FPS on windows 7.

That's a DirectX vs. OpenGL thing going on. I find OSX (at least up until mavericks) runs very well on older hardware (better than Windows 7 anyway).

I would reimage it. Both have been fine on my MBPr 2013. You may have just developed enough cruft that the updates have bogged each other down.

don't think so, i tried the update it was crap, tried formatting the partition and it still was crap, tried formatting the drive and give up on my boot camp partition (not really sad about it, been long since i had booted on windows any way, 1 year plus) and still ran like crap. Mind you i did that 3 months after the releases of months Yosemite and El Capitan. Mountain Lion simply runs better than those two on my machine for reason i'll never know, since it seems like i'm alone on this situation.

Gave up on that, MacBooks that have a discrete GPU will always run hotter and have worse battery life on Windows compared to OS X. As mostly to do with that it's not possible to switch between the iGPU and dGPU based on work load and that Windows will always use the dGPU. To counter the heat problem you can install a fan controller program but then you're sacrificing silence 

One day I will be able to play Monster Hunter Frontier in French/Italian/English on my PC, it's just a matter of time... 4 5 6 7 8 9 years later: It's finally coming!!!

Are you on a mechanical drive I remember my 2012 mbp I had a 240gig ssd and it flew, side by side with my 2015 retina basic tasks were identical.

Updated my Hackintosh yesterday, other than a hacky solution to get audio working (which is only temporary until Multibeast is updated for Sierra) everything is working great, Nvidia released the Alternative Video Driver this morning and I'm now using system definition 14.2. 

 

Other than the usual Hackintosh Imessage issues I've not noticed a single problem. 

 

Overall I'm happy with Sierra. 

 

Btw Apple did rename it from Mac OS X to just MacOS with Sierra. 

 

Also MacOS has had native NTFS read/write support since Mountain Lion. The problems start if you don't shut down Windows properly or safely remove a removable device as Mac OS will refuse to mount the drive if it wasn't cleanly shut down by Windows. Heck my Hackintosh even reads my NVMe SSD that's NTFS (with a custom kext).
