Posted September 7, 2016 Hello people of the Internet, I'm building a 1300$ gaming PC and I was wondering if I should get a sound card or not and if so which sound card. My mother board is a MSI z170a sli plus. I will mainly be gaming, streaming, watching YouTube, and very little video editing. Thank you for reading have a great day! Posted September 7, 2016 You should be fine with onboard, the only reason I have one is because I run specific software that doesn't play well with realtek chips and I needed more outputs than what came with my mobo. Posted September 7, 2016 In general you don't really need one. I use a cheap USB external sound card because my on-board jacks get EM interference whenever my graphics cards spool up. Posted September 7, 2016 I would personally suggest against it, not worth it... Unless you have higher end headphones that onboard audio just doesn't work out for you. I have a sound card(Xonar STX), the only reason I got it is because I have high impedance headphones and the onboard was way too quiet even at 100%. Now it's too loud at 15%. (Could've most likely gotten away with a much cheaper soundcard, but thought to myself "what the hell, may as well try and get something better than the onboard... Quite frankly I hear no difference between my onboard and STX, other than the volume due to the AMP.) But, word of caution, if you do plan on getting a sound card, RESEARCH CAREFULLY. Because if I had known that my sound card had the following issue, I would've NEVER bought it. Every once in a while, I'm assaulted by a terrible high pitch screeching that risk making me deaf... and I even broke my headphones as I threw 'em off quickly in a panic. Many other sound cards are also apparently affected by this/similar issue(I believe it's caused by both drivers and audio stack in Windows, as apparently, Linux users don't have that issue?), but onboard realtek isn't though, AFAIK. Most PCIE sound cards are the same or worse then built in sound cards on a motherboard. Posted September 8, 2016 Sound cards (PCIE) are good for minimalistic designs only. The noise floor will always be worse than external hardware. Motherboards that are stated to have some sort of amplification are usually good for upwards of 300ohm headphones. Unless you have planar magnetic 600ohm sets, there isn't really a need. Also there is NO difference when using AMPS in sound signature unless it is a tube amp. Tube amps introduce colouring (warmth) due to distortion, while any solid state increases power for high impedance headphones with no difference in sound from the source material (some exceptions are FIIO have bass boost toggle etc) ALL Dacs do the same thing. They reduce noise floor (that static hiss you hear when no music is playing). Anything else you are told is simply snake oil. Look into Objective 2 Odac/Amp combo and the story behind the creation of it for more information on what I've just stated. Also Ohm matters next to nothing, it is all about how sensitive the driver is, not if the headphones are 600 ohm or 50 ohm, those 50 ohm headohones can be way harder to drive than the 600 ohm headphones. Posted September 8, 2016 From a gaming perspective the main reason IMO to get a sound card is the binaural implementation for surround sound that applies to headphones. For gaming with friends you can't really use 5.1 surround sound (and its not usually good layout on a desk/PC) so you end up on headphones and then surround sound is important for getting the sound out of your head and around you. The best solution is current SBX from soundblaster but Dolby headphone comes on a lot of cards and such and its OK as well. Neither is actually a good binaural effect IMO but its better than just using onboard sound. These aren't just reverb effects and such, its a HRTF with a HRIR implementation to try and get the audio around you naturally. My experience of the Soundblaster Z has been a enormously improved surround effect in games like Battlefield and Arma but the sound quality from the amp was bad and I ended up with a Schitt DAC and AMP for driving the headphones. I also found the mic port very noisy and ended up with a USB sound card just for the microphone.
