AMD launches 7th Gen APUs

"Today is a big day for AMD, not only is the company coming out with its new seventh generation of APUs but it is also launching the new AM4 platform, bringing along support for DDR4, next generation I/O standards and of course, the upcoming Zen processors, which will be arriving early next year."

Although it's not the Zen/Polaris APUs we've been waiting for, it should still be a decent upgrade from the current APUs which is always good. The 35Watt and 65 watt TDPs make them interesting as the 35Watt versions should be able to go into laptops without too much heat issues so if they perform decently well 1080p at low settings then cheap gaming laptops will be very welcome no? :D

The report also says how it will be pitting against Skylake i5s which could mean they aren't the cheapest APUs but if the iGPU is 1080p worthy then I feel this is probably a better buy as you can get a good gaming performance at the moment for decent prices then upgrade to a Zen CPU as it's on the AM4 platform while then getting a dGPU giving you the best upgrade path from AMD in years :D

If they can go in laptops this will be interesting. I had a laptop with a A6 (that I overclocked for lols) and currently have a laptop with a A10. Both were pretty lackluster, but I would look forward to seeing one of these in a laptop.

the 35watt skus will be nice for a passive/silent home theatre build that can do some light gaming (nothing like GTA5 ofc , but more casual titles , good for the big screen)

It seems like a porting of the latest FM2+ APU (the one at top A10 speeds while staying 65W) to the AM4 platform. APUs' IMC were already working with 2133MHz DDR3 by default, after all.
I guess this means that (at least some) AM4 chipsets are ready? I wonder if there was pressure from mobo manufacturers to release up to date AMD boards, or if this is a strategy to decouple socket and chipset polishing from Zen's launch (so you don't get a problematic USB driver or whatever interfering with users' experience with the new CPU, which they need to be a success even before reaching consumers), especially considering that one thing is to have something running, and another thing is to have it running in Windows 10 :P

I'm curious as to what all the news really means. Will we see AM4 motherboards and the new APUs on newegg within the week? And though the APUs/Chipsets being launched support DDR4 2400 native, is there any information regarding what faster ram might do for these chips? 

 

I'm also curious about the x4 950. I wonder if it's as terrible as my 860k, seeing as they both are excavator I'd imagine they will perform exactly the same.

I'm glad that efficiency is vastly improved here. The A10-7870K has lower clocks, but is 95W. This A12-9800 does better at 65W its seems. I'm looking forward to seeing how well these APU's perform with that DDR4! :D

Is the mainstream AMD desktop chips also running on AM4. As if they are yay no different mobos for FX and APU lineups of CPU's.

It would seem that way. Athlon's are APU's without the graphics. And the plan going forward for AMD was a unified platform capable of the the CPU's and APU's.

If this is true that would really help budget end gamers that want to upgrade to a dedicated GPU and CPU from their APU without needing a new motherboard. This is really cool!

AM4. Plus the r7 graphics have a 65% oc on them compared to the original one on the 7850k, which was hard to even push past 1Ghz on.

that 950 is basically a x4 845 with DDR4. Same clocks.

 

the x4 845 (which i own) is around Sandy Bridge i5 worth of performance in tasks not needing L3 cache. In tasks needing L3 cache, its worse.

Feels like the whole point of these are to act as placeholders for building new AM4 systems now when people are doing back-to-school shopping, that can then be upgraded at the end of the semester to Zen APUs/CPUs.

It really isn't about the cpus, it is that am4 is going to be released.
