Driving exam (last time hopefully) question

Hey people, so i wanted to ask you about any possible advices you could give me to my next and 3rd driving exam on Thursday (yes i said 3rd attempt). Any advice you can give me would be cool, especially if from someone who recently finished the driving exam recently or has experience as vehicle instructor or just any knowledgeable driver. I have already checked 15 common mistakes to avoid, already checked parallel parking tutorials and besides the driving time and advices from my father/instructor, for some reason i still feel some insecurity. Long story short, ive already switched schools and passed the code exam 1st time, but ive been stuck because of the driving exams since early 2016 and this is hopefully, my last time:

  • 1st time i failed because the examinator said i should have used 1st gear while driving a steep road with about 10% accentuation (twice) and for not looking at a road mirror proerly and failed just because of those 3 things (I still have a grudge on that extremely nitpicky guy)
  • 2nd time because the car had trouble starting up, didnt have enough power to drive steep roads on more than 1st gear and i screwed up when going left (on single direction road) 3 times, altough the roads where also steep and he said i trespassed two continuous lines. Even so, the car had definetly mechanical problems since the instructor took 17 keyturns to startup the vehicle after the failed exam.

Back to the new school, theyve taught me things i learned on 9 lessons that the instructors on the other school did not with two different ones, two cars and 45 lessons. Ive been practicing the handling of the vehicle and my father says im good to go, but my instructor said about 3 weeks ago that if i could, more lessons. This is what left me uncomfortable, since the 1st instructor (he obviously said that i needed a many more instead and in a worst way), but even so it was enough to not let me stay as confident as i wanted. I bought two extras and left another one to the same day as the exam, 1 hour before. I know im good enough to the drive a regular car, the problem is missing on important aspects that for an examinator are gold (lights on a tunnel/freeway, warning flashes and looking at the car mirrors/dead spots). Anyways, what you guys think? Sorry for the long post too :(, but please id like honest words from someone.

Shoulder check when turning into a turning lane at a light.

Complete stops at stop signs.

Pay attention to signs, they have been doing this for years and know how to trick you up with signs being hidden behind tree's and bushes.

 

Make sure you look at the dash for the Check Engine light, if its on mention it.

Walk around the vehilce, see if the lights are intact.

Wow in America we don't have to learn any of the gearing stuff because everything is automatic. I wish we taught this as we would have less idiots and people would realize even on an automatic car you can downshift into low and use the car instead of riding your breaks down a mountain until they don't work killing a van of children

Just keeping this here as a Parallel parking you must pass here.

Everyone now seems to be backing into to a parallel parking spot.

I do not get this. Even if there is a lot of distance 1.5-2 car lengths, morons still back in, holding up traffic.

Remember to turn the wheels into the curb when parking on any slope, up hill or downhill.

Think of how the car will roll if it loses brakes. You want it to roll into sidewalk and house, not into street, or across street.

 

Your hands should be at the 9 and 3 positions for automatics.

 

For a manual I dont know what the rule is, one hand, wrist at 12, hand hanging down. Just kidding!

Because of the geometry of cars, a lot are too long and dont have the turning radius to swerve in forwards, you need to reverse in to get the back end of the car in properly.

 

OP: Always check mirrors and do head checks also, if its raining or dark put those headlights on, in regards to a hill try (if possible) to go up the gears but if the car is struggling drop it down a gear and make sure you  arent in the overtaking lane.

Turning radius problems are quite rare. I have been trying to figure this problem out for some time.

I look to see who the numbnuts is that is in the drivers seat and its a great cross section of people.

Not just old, not just minorities, not just a certain sex. Could be a symptom of when they acquired there drivers license.

Its an inexperience thing too because if I am behind someone that is doing it, I wont move back or I will be very slow and act confused to them, all the while smiling and eyeballing em! Hard!

If you have questions about shifting, then you need to practice more. Driving standard should be next to second nature, it requires muscle memory. As for the other stuff, always stop completely at stop signs (the car will rock back a little once it stops completely), and always stop before the line. A good thing to do is to stop when the very front 'touches' the line (in your line of sight, not when the front actually crosses the line). ALWAYS look over your shoulder as well as in your side mirrors before changing lanes. There is a high chance that a car is in your blind spot, not checking it can lead to running into that car.

 

And I'm not sure if you're allowed to let the wheel slide through your hands when finishing a turn, but that helps too, much easier than shuffling it through your hands (they allow us to in the states). But otherwise you should always keep both hands on the wheel.

 

It's pretty straightforward, parallel parking is the only part that worries some people, just try to imagine where the car is positioned in the space around you and correct your movement accordingly. That's how I do it, I don't use weird techniques like 'turn the wheel the other way when the B-pillar is lined up with the car in front of you'. Just pull up next to the car in front, reverse into the spot, counter steer at the right time, and then straighten the car.

 

As for your line problem, study what the road markers mean, they are very important to maintain an accident free road. Always listen to the signs and especially the lines on the road. I don't know how they are laid out in Portugal but here in the states it's relatively simple.

 

And get your car checked out by a mechanic, or rent one that works right (and if you do rent one, get an automatic and learn how to drive standard properly later, when an instructor isn't in the seat nagging at you).

Thats not their fault then provided they have put their indicator on prior to going forward enough to reverse.

You just have to learn not to be an asshole and ride up their ass, recognize that people reverse parallel park all the time and see that when their indicator is on and theres only 1 spot to the side that they are trying to get into that spot. And if you have gone forward enough so they cant get in you will see their reverse lights turn on, you not getting out of the way doesn't give you a right to complain that its taking them so long because you could have done something about it!

 

That's not their fault at all, you'd be the asshole in that situation lol

So after my experience in the drive learning I say this

 

1) Do Not Stress it! Stress will make you drive like shit and they can smell fear

 

2) ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS Blind Spot check and I mean a full shoulder check 

 

3) Right before the test try to drive a bit to get in the grove and calm down. If you got your permit try to be the to drive there with your dad or mom or other guardian

 

4) The Speed Limit IS NOT THE SUGGEST DRIVE SPEED you should be going a couple of MPH BELOW speed limit on the BEST CONDITIONS 

 

5) When parallel parking at least in Texas AS SOON as you feel the tire hit the curb STOP and don't drive over the curb just restart the process they can't fail you, maybe penalize

 

6) Be Very Polite to the instructor like Sir or Ma'am and Thank you for your time polite remember you're at there mercy

 

7) Don't over complicate AND THE WORST THING TO DO is just STOPPING when you're unsure or know your fucked up JUST KEEP DRIVING.

Learning standard is easy once you get it. Its like riding a bicycle you never forget. The hardest part is to stop on a steep hill and proceed in first gear with a vehicle behind.

 

Sometimes I like being a prick on the road while driving, but most of the time I am courteous. It livens things up on the dull drive home. I rarely get road rage, but others do and I just smile and wave and they give me the finger. Its fun times!

I gotta agree - do you realize how dangerous it is to intentionally cause road rage in other drivers?

 

Even if you yourself remain in control, you could easily cause an accident still, since making someone fly into a road rage could easily cause them to lose control of their vehicle. They might hurt or kill themselves (despite it being their own fault) - but more importantly, he could accidentally crash into YOU, causing your own death. Remaining in control of your own vehicle does not guarantee that you would be able to avoid any possible collision or accident cause by a person having a fit of road rage.

 

Frankly, you sound kind of dangerous, and definitely like a dick, to other drivers.

 

I personally back into a Parallel parking spot. Why? Simply because that was the way I was taught (both by any and all driving instructors, and by my parents). I've NEVER seen someone pull into a parallel parking spot, unless there was no car behind the spot. If you're parallel parking into a spot w/ cars on both sides, I've only ever witnessed people backing in.

 

Perhaps pulling into the spot somehow is "superior", but you cannot fault people for not doing something that is simply not taught. If you want more people to pull into a spot, you should teach as many people as you know how to do the manoeuvre.

Driving exams here in the US are very different, much, much more lax. So there's really no advice I could give you on them, since my own experiences don't compare to what you go through on a driving test.

It does not make any sense. A car length and a half is plenty to perform a head first maneuver, 2 car lengths is a mile and a half. Yet you guys still like to back in just cuz you were taught that. Well the whole idea and purpose of a parallel parking job is because there is no room to go head first. It means you would have to do one of two things. First put your tire up onto the curb, or second perform a shallow maneuver in which you would be 2'+ from the curb, which is another common practice even on tight roadways.

 

It boils down to inexperienced drivers on the roadway impeding the flow of traffic.

This post is slightly incoherent, so I'll try my best to address your points.

 

If there is plenty of room, in most cases, people DO pull forward into the spot. But in those cases, 99% of time, there's no car behind the spot, and thus, a parallel parking job would not be required in the first place.

 

How do you expect people to competently "pull into" a parallel parking spot, when they do not have instruction on how to do it? And when 99% of drivers do not do it, thus they do not get any experience practising, nor do they get to see any examples of this in action.

 

I don't know about you, but I don't just randomly take my car out to try different ways of parking just for fun. I know how to parallel park, so I feel no need to experiment with different methods that may or may not be more efficient (still not convinced).

 

Reversing into a Parallel Parking spot does not impede traffic any more than any other parking job. Assuming you give the person the required space needed to park, that is. If I need to parallel park, and the person behind me gives me plenty of space, I can pull into that spot within seconds, which I doubt is any slower than pulling it would be, in the grand scheme of things.

 

If you have to wait 5 seconds instead of 4.2 seconds while someone parks in front of you, and that extra 0.8 seconds is that big of a deal, then you need to relax, and not worry so much about life.
