I really don't like that I have to go from page to page in a post, even if it's one more page on a post, and that's the final one. I would like a infinite scrolling feature like Tumblr has, where you can go through the entire Tumblr page without having to click on the next button and I would like this feature for the Forum as an option. It may be hard on the PC for a thread like Show Off Your Setup, but I'd be nice as an option either way.

I would actually really enjoy this too. You could do like show 20-500 posts per page or some incremental steps. I usually miss posts in the middle of 7+ page things

To the best of my knowledge, that isn't something that anyone here can add.  IPS would have to create a new version of the forum software with that feature.

Just adding "Load more" button at the end of thread listing (and single topics) would be fine. With thread view it was a thing before big update to IPS4.

yeah, it would be cool to have such an option. When you get on the bottom of the page, you could either press the previous/next page buttons or the endless post function button. Maybe it could even flow into the next topic, I would like that. Not sure how possible though.

This wouldn't be very easy to add, and wouldn't work as well here as it does for sites that are showing you a feed of content like YouTube or tumblr - with ltt, you often want to jump to a specific point, which is harder to achieve efficiently with infinite scrolling.

that feature is actually baked into the IPS software and could be updated quite easy as this forum runs on PHP and making a global change like that is relatively easy (one reason why php is amazing for large sites like forums) but only one issue is resources, if 100+ people are browsing at the same time and loading pages automatically it could cause unresponsiveness. and to add a button to load more.... well why not just click over to the next page if you gotta click something anyways?

The infinite scroll feature there wouldn't make sense for this, because it would mean that if you tried to scroll to the bottom (which you would have to do by scrolling rather than by clicking a link to the last page), it would result in every single post in the topic being sent to your computer, which for some topics would be absolutely unmanageable.

As far as forums go they dont use the infinite scroll due to how you want to manage the flow of information, redit i find so complicated to read due to how its structured its broken and sometimes you need to go back to go forward, as far as pages its easier to load and go to specific pages to find the answer vs loading 300 comments to find what you want. i can see the infinite scroll being a good idea on the main page while going thru the topics but then again, pages make it all tidy as a new comment pushes the topic to the top. and would make this site a total mess.

@ryan_vickers Yeah, I'm not a fan of the idea of infinite scrolling, I mean on threads with a few pages (no more than let's say 50) it might be fine. But on a thread like the LGBT Community or The Garage there's way too many posts and/or pages that would make infinite scrolling an absolute pain in the arse to deal with.

How about just a simple option in settings then? no one has to enable it if they don't want to. I just think having two page threads are stoopid because you're getting into the topic and then all the previous posts are gone and pop its a new page and you don't know what the hell is going on.

 

If yall think that inf scrolling is bad, what about an option for posts per thread? have all 21 posts a page instead of a new page just for that post.
