Micron Announces QuantX Branding for 3D XPoint; Shows Off Some Very Impressive Performance Too

In a keynote speech later this morning at Flash Memory Summit, Micron will be unveiling the branding and logo that their products based on 3D XPoint memory will be using. The new QuantX brand is Micron's counterpart to Intel's Optane brand and will be used for the NVMe storage products that we will hear more about later this year. 3D Xpoint memory was jointly announced by Intel and Micron shortly before last year's Flash Memory Summit and we analyzed the details that were available at the time. Since then there has been very little new official information but much speculation. We do know that the initial products will be NVMe SSDs rather than NVDIMMs or other memory bus attached devices.

In a comparison of U.2 NVMe drives, Micron showed performance of QuantX drives ranging from 200GB to 1600GB, relative to a 1600GB NAND flash NVMe SSD. The QuantX drives saturated the PCIe x4 link with a 70/30 mix of random reads and random writes with queue depths of just 4-6, while the NAND SSD gets nowhere close to saturating the link with random accesses. The next comparison was of the PCIe x8 add-in card performance, where the link was saturated with queue depths between 10 and 16, depending on the capacity of the QuantX drive.

Wow... The performance here is just amazing... Saturating pcie x8 in random read and write? Never thought I would see that day. Thoughts?

And I thought my intel 530 ssd was fast..

which has degraded from 500mb to sub 100mb sequential reads

 

it boots Windows 8 in 12 seconds  faster than my 850 evo somehow

Nearly the entire Windows 10 image fits on that cache, and thus it loads incredibly quickly. The 850 EVO only has a 128MB cache.

 

As for the Micron/Intel comment, I merely mean to say it shouldn't surprise anyone that the king of logic silicon and the former king of memory, when working together, can produce a product that blows everyone out of the water.

There are reasons Micron was once the king of the DRAM world. Between it and Intel, this really shouldn't be surprising.

Actually no, Micron is the one who bought a firm building phase-change memory.

 

That once was less than 5 years ago, and further, Micron is still the king in the server world. Samsung may own high-density GDDR5, but Micron makes the highest capacity DDR3/4.

Now all I'm wondering is what it's gonna take to make sure the connection isn't a bottleneck for 3D XPoint... A dimm slot seems like it'll be enough though. It'll be interesting to see what intel implements on Kaby Lake. 

 

I'm still in awe of the fact that this thing is capable of saturating a pcie x8 slot... I feel like micron purposely didn't show x16 results as perhaps XPoint can't saturate that, but that's still probably >10 GB/s which is definitely comparable to dram...

 

I just hope these things don't cost too much...

Same here. Since Windows loves its pagefile so much, an SSD with IOPS like that would really be good.

Incredible IOPS performance, amazing! Seeing storage, memory improvements lately is quite exciting. SSD storage really is improving quite a large order of magnitude.
