PSU Tier List [OLD]

Go to solution Solved by Spotty,

This is a legacy list. It is no longer being updated.

The new PSU Tier List can be found here:

Out of those two, I'd get the Bitfenix and not the XFX wich is a bit older and louder.

The Bitfenix is a pretty good PSU with a rather relaxed fan profile.

So i'm looking for a new power supply for my pc. My pc dosen't need more then 450w of power but i want to get a 650w psu for some future proofing. So my question is in the tier 2, is the 2017 650w refer to the new cx line? If yes, then is there any difference between the M and non-M(except for modularity of course)? And what should i get?

the best quality you can get for your money.

Not some overwatt bronze thing!

When you have the Money for a 650W medium Quality PSU, you have the Money for a 400-450W good quality unit and I'd rather have a 450W be quiet Straight Power 11, Bitfenix Whisper M or Formula instead of a 650W Bronze unit - any Bronze unit.

So you should rethink what you want.

Especially since you only need 650W for ultra high end hardware like a VEGA 64/1080ti _AND_ a high end Desktop CPU like Threadripper or an LGA2066 Thing.

And I highly doubt that you will do that and stay in around the same pricerange as you are now.

Ergo: 650W is bullshit and a better quality 450W is preferable.

As every higher quality unit beats the shit out of the lower quality, higher watt one, in every aspect.

So go for the quality and not the Quantity!
As you don't know what the Future will bring, I don't even know. Nobody knows.

And it is entirely possible (and highly likely) that the the ATX specification will be gotten rid of and replaced with something not quite compatible. So in that case your "future proofing" was for nothing.

Remember:
AT survived roughly 10 Years.

ATX already is 22 years old.

As for power Consumption:
Ryzen 7/1700x with _TWO_ Radeon HD7970GHz/280X is roughly 550W secondary.

With a single GPU its something like 200-300W usually, depending on Game and Settings.

With VSync on and 60Hz you save much power in some situations. FOr example Murdered Soul Suspect: VSync Off: ~450W. VSync On: ~250W (with both Radeons I mentioned above)

Are there any good quality SFX(-L) PSU left, that don't use Semi Fanless?
Except the be quiet SFX-L Power of course...

I need one because the Semi Fanless mode of my SX700-LPT is kinda heating up my 3,5" HDD in the RVZ-01

@STRMfrmXMN, I really don't like how you've got Corsair "HX(old)" in tier 2, because Clearly the 2 Seasonic S12II versions aren't tier 2, and there's been quite a few 80plus gold versions over the years. Please remove it, or add a more detailed discription

IIRC, the M has a sleeve bearing fan (which won't last as long). In terms of performance and quality, aside from the fan, they're basically equal.

Non-modular uses LLC resonant conversion, so it handles transient loads better. It's also more efficient...

HX Bronze and WHite are mostly the same, Original, independently regulate (Dual Mag Amp) Seasonic S12 Design. The 520 and 620 or 50W version at least. There was a 450W version though that didn't sell well (well, when even I didn't really know about it...)

Should we care about them?? Well, we are talking about a 2006 and 2008 lineup. Of course there was also a 1050W or rather 525 Dual PSU in one casing with DC-DC and really weird Combined powers because of that. Also ~2008 or so.

The more interesting versions are the gold and the silver versions. But even those are old...

And AFAIR not all of them got tested anyway - Corsair used to change models w/o changing the name at the time...

For example there are about half a dozend or so 650W COrsair TX Series units....

Which PSU is better? Cx450M or Cx450, both same price, but I heard one is 2015 and the cx450 is from 2017

Both are fine. The CX450 has a better fan but lacks PCIe connections. The CXM has the worse fan but better compatibility with GPUs because of more PCIe connections.

I'd say that the non-M is "better" but they're both pretty close.

My point is, you are going to be hard pressed to find a new HX Gold Fully Modular, so the people who will look at it are buying used PSUs.

Typically, the used market is full of power supplies that are about 8 or 9 years old, (Because people tend to just reuse them, or sell their old computer as a whole), or are fairly new and are complete garbage (Because people get their celeron, their GTX 1030 and their $30 fire-master, then realise it runs like shit, so upgrade the CPU, GPU and PSU (Usually to a 700W branded POS)), so the people who will look at this are buying used, and are getting falsified information.

Most should be able to live with a single extra molex cable.

In a low end build, an excess molex cable shouldn't bother them too much.

Still the CXM and CX are both good budget units, the tradeoff for modularity is worth it IMO but maybe not to you

Appreciate your inputs!

What would be the best choice to get from the list below (Canadian prices)?

be quiet! Pure Power 10 CM 500W ($72)

Corsair TX750M ($100)

My build is Intel i5-8400 and Nvidia 1070 (might ugrade to 1080/ti in the future)

Or do you suggest something different?

TIA
