PSU Tier List [OLD]

Go to solution Solved by Spotty,

This is a legacy list. It is no longer being updated.

The new PSU Tier List can be found here:

1) you don't need no 600W

2) if you do need, you wouldn't ask for the Price!

For a non overclocked Standard Desktop System with AM4 or LGA115x and a mid to higher end graphics card a 400W is more than plenty. And good ones start at ~60€.

For example Bitfenix Formula.

To be on the safe side, you might want to go with 550W.

But even 550W is enough for a Ryzen 7/1700x on ASUS X370-F Strix and -TWO- Radeon HD7970GHz/280X (1100MHz Core, 1500MHz Memory)...

And an i7-3930K with an RX480 OC (Power Color Red Devil) measures about 350W Primary.

What is the spec? Why 600W?
If you have a working System, get a Powermeter. Brennstuhl BM231 should be available at any Obi for around 10€.

Formula ain't modular, if you can afford a T2 PSU it better damn well be modular IMO

At 450w it's 1 extra cable, it's really not an issue...

That might be the case but the Formula Comes with 1 CPU Cable, one PCIe Cable (2 Connectors), two Drive Cables. And of course the obvious ATX Cable....

So wich cable do you want to manage exactly??

FOr one I recommend a Zip Tie, wich the Formula AFAIR comes with.

That's the Point, under 750W Modular doesn't make a lot of sense

And in some cases its the worst (ITX Systems) becuase you don't have the space to manage the cables.

I haven't checked, it's just from the disscussion I remembered.

I think it was because of transistent response and potentially cold solder points?

I think transient response, Vreg, and I don't even remember the other thing(s).

I definitely saw it and wanted to put it into T1 but then looked at the other Seasonic units in T1 and thought "nah, it's not that good but it's still very good."

It's got better overshoot transient performance than the Prime though, that was a minor issue with them

The EVGA G2 650W got an average of .67% regulation in JG's hotbox and the Focus+ Gold 750W got .33%. .33% >>> .67%, no?, The GQ did 1%

I'll always say that OklahomaWolf's averaging of load regulation doesn't make sense. 12V is most important, and averaging all three values ignores that.

0.5% regulation on 12V and 4% on the rest gives the same average score as 7.5% on 12V and 0.5% on minor rails.

But i might in the future, and i hope a quality PSU will last several years.

I looked for the Bitfenix Formula (thanks for the hint), but it's not readily available here, not from reputable sellers at least.

Yes, the point is that, as someone else said, at Tier 1 (in the end i was stuck searching T1 PSUs) there is not a lot of choice below 550W, and the prices do not change that much.

As an example, i quoted the price for the Corsair TX750M because it was as cheap as 650W alternatives.

7 hours ago, Stefan Payne said:

I guess now i could do with a 450-500W PSU, but as you say at that point i might as well go with 550W just in case, then when you start looking for quality components there is not much difference between 550W and more.

At least from what i found so far.

This said, if i found a T1 550W for 60 euros i'd probably go for it, but in the end when i find a Seasonic Focus Gold 450W (which is a Tier2) for 80 euros, i might as well go for the beefier T1 Corsair.

Am i reading too much into the importance of Tiers?

I really don't know. The Focus Gold has a semi-modular and non-modular variant. Apparently the semi-mod one has a 2-years longer warranty.
