Nvidia 1080ti discussion... Where is it?

NowThatsDamp

Well guys, I'm starting a thread about it: I want my 1080ti.

Does anyone have any thoughts in it? Expected core count, price, ect?

Here are my thoughts:

The 780ti had the same core count as the Titan Black

The 980ti had a slightly lower count than the Titan X

Which means ??? to me on the count of the 1080ti.

For the sake of simplicity, we will ignore the Double Precision capabilities of the Tesla card, as they likely won't be making it into the Geforce SKU. Also, the Pascal Titan will be called the Titan P in this analysis.

Let's think about the Tesla P100. The P100 has 56 SM units unlocked, bringing the core count to 3584. This, however, in not the full capability of Pascal, which is taped out to 60 SM units, or 3840 cores. I see this 1080ti introduction going down in one of three ways.

Optimistic version:

Nvidia tosses out a 1080ti with the 3584 cores at $700, and follows it with the Titan P retaining a full fat 3840 cores at $1000.

Dream version:

Nvidia pulls a 780ti move and drops a 1080ti with all 3840 cores, and the Titan P will have nothing to its name besides more VRAM and perhaps some FP64 performance also.

Pessimistic version:

Nvidia runs this through two generations like Kepler, a Titan P will be released with 3584 cores, and the next enthusiast cards will show up next generation. An 1180 is dropped with a bit more core count than the 1080, and then the 1180ti will have all 3840 cores along with the Titan P2

Now... Please gift unto me and all other readers your insight

But why so many $$$?

Both the 780ti and 980ti launched at $699. With Polaris looking like it might not be complete garbage on a price per frame standpoint, I don't think even Nvidia would have the audacity to jump $200 like that. I always wait until the end of a generation to buy. I don't like when my cards are outdone by cards of the same architecture. It makes my card fell bad. But I can't wait a year. The 780ti in my rig right now isn't liking Witcher 3 very much and it's only getting worse.

Because the 1080 is $699. Why would they price it the same when it's a better performer?

Nvidia won't let AMD have the enthusiast market, we'll see the 1080ti after Vega.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Just remember 3 gens were all $500 and that was after the top card was $400. Now everyone seems ok with $700 and up...   vote with your wallets, not your gaming minds.

but if vega doesn't beat the 1080, then they will probably hold on to their titan/1080ti

xD a 490 will match a 1080. Most likely. Though my guess is a disparity between the 490 and a 490x. The Fury replacement  should stomp a 1080.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

i wouldn't bet on that..

Looking like a RX 480 is 10% slower than a 1070. The difference between a 1070 and 1080 isn't that much in some games. Add 20% to a 480 and you have a 1080. Which is a conservative estimate of the performance of a 490. And since AMD chose to include the 490 in the Vega architecture that means it could even have HBM2.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

The 780 launched at $650, and saw a price cut at 780ti release. The 980 released at $550 and held it's ground when the 980ti was released, but people stopped buying it because the 980ti was a lot more card for not a whole lot more money. $899 would be ridiculous. Or, if it's not, AMD get your shit together because I can't afford this anymore.

amd was comparing 2x480 to a 1080 and they were performing about equally, and i doubt the 490 will be as fast as 480 CF

If you follow the pricing structure AMD laid out with Polaris 10, a RX 490 will cost 330us. Big if but that would render the 1080 useless. Nvidia would be forced to lower their prices or lose the market.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Woah slow down. The 480 hasn't even been released yet. Wait for some benchmarks.

That's for the founder's edition. It's likely that the MSRP for the 1080ti will be around $699, and a founder's card for $750-$850 (yay overpriced reference cards!)

That test was dobious at best. Nothing matches, 50% utilization? Why would they even show that. There is some serious smoke and mirrors going on. But the people with the cards are laying some serious hints out there. And all the hints look bad for Nvidia.

This is horseshoes for AMD, they just have to get close. Even 15% under a 1070 fucks Nvidia. Would you pay double for 15%? I wouldn't. I have some serious Nvidia fanboys as friends that would probably not buy Pascal if that happens.

I agree with mikat. Unfortunately, it's been a few generations since AMD has had an upper hand. And now more and more titles are having Nvidia Gameworks tech in them, which AMD just can't seem to keep up with. Nvidia isn't giving up the source code, and honestly, they created the tech. They are allowed to keep it to themselves. That's capitalism. I love to hope that AMD will come through but the have failed time and time again. It got so bad last generation that they did lateral re-badges and then wouldn't even admit it. With DX12, VR and things like Gameworks and whatever it is that AMD calls their response, there's more and more to performance then just horsepower. Kepler 7 series was the last time a company released a flagship and then all we had to care about was "LOOK AT ALL THE CORES". There is just more to it now. Also I don't want to have to crossfire cards to get decent frame rates. Crossfire and SLI is pure cancer. Maybe SLI will work a bit better now that Nvidia will only offer 2-way, but we can only hope.
