US government shuts down after Congress fails to pass funding bill

CyberneticTitan

It seems that you block anyone you have heated arguments with.

I don't mind heated debates so long as it progresses or serves the argument in some way. If it no longer serves a purpose other than to cause annoyance or aggravate I think it's better for everyone to just back out. If it resolves itself, as it did here, then I won't. I know I'd rather not have the grief, and I suspect this is the same for other people :)

That's good to know at least. I always get really paranoid when I'm expecting something and the tracker says delivered when I don't physically have what I ordered in my hands.

Likewise. My local Dominos tends to do this and I always worry that some lucky bastard is tucking into the Texas BBQ I just paid for  (Even though it literally always arrives!!)

If this were any other country, I daresay there would be riots in the streets until things were fixed.

Nope, not here, we had no government at all for like 1.5 years. No fuck was ever given, except for the guy that said he wouldn't shave until we had a government again.

Yeah, I love how people hear the word 'social' and they flip shit. It's just media buzzwords that keep people in fear. Fearful people are more likely to follow an example rather than make rational decisions and the news media knows this. It's the same with the word 'Islam' it's been demonized in order to push an agenda onto fearful people. The US needs to get its head on straight and get with the fucking times. George Bush is no longer president, you think we would be past this shit by now :/

Remind them that here in America, we have lots of Socialism. We share the cost of schools, roads, national parks, product safety, food and drug inspection, clean air and water, diplomatic proceedings with other countries, criminal investigations, emergency responders, and the military. We also have socialized medicine (before the ACA) in the forms of Medicare and Medicaid.

Capitalism is not a bad thing. But there are lots of cases where pooling our resources under the government is more effective and efficient. Ask anti-socialists what they think the state of the roads would be without federal spending and planning of the Interstate. I imagine a disorganized, inefficient, and expensive road system.

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason and intellect has intended us to forgo their use, and by some other means to give us knowledge which we can attain by them. - Galileo Galilei

For all of you Americans complaining, there's a pretty good chance that it's YOUR fault this happened. If I'm not mistaken, you guys had like a low 60s voter turnout. If you choose to forfeit your say, you're just as guilty as the politicians.

I don't have the right to vote; you also can't just blame the voters because the parties are fighting, it's entirely to do with having split beliefs (in the people and representatives of those people). If we lived in a direct democracy you might be able to point the finger right at the people, but you have to consider that buffer of electorates that can never be perfect representatives of the people.

Please quote me if you want me to see your post about my post, otherwise I may lose track of the thread and never see it.

I'd love to help, but I'm probably gonna' have to ask for more info before we can get anything done.

Have a wonderful day.

I blame Career politicians mostly. They get in there and stay there and never leave, meanwhile they just rack up the money and don't do their jobs. pathetic.

It's a fucking mess. This country is being torn apart by idiots that twist things around.

Unfortunately, it's just not that simple.

For everyone reading this topic, here is a useful video on the root of the problem. Please watch it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTJubcZFA78

Or you can read the TL;DW:

Due to congressional district redrawing being done by both parties, it's easier for a politician of one party to win his election against an opponent from the opposite party. However, he has much more to fear from a primary challenger who is more left/right than himself, and therefore his opponent has a better chance of winning votes from among the now heavily democratic or republican districts. This drags both parties to the far left/right and is one of the main reasons for the emergence of the Tea Party's prominence in the Republican party as well as some more far-left Democrats.

The main problem is that because both parties are now more heavily ideological, they see the others as increasingly radical and extreme, which makes it difficult to compromise with them and difficult to listen to them.

Its not both parties. That is the worst cop out Ive ever heard. This is the GOP masterminding this disaster. They are a diabolical twisted group that is unrecognizable since their adoption of the Tea Party.

Make no mistake about it. This is about the adoption of the Affordable Health Care Law. Key word. LAW. It was passed by congress ratified by the Senate and signed into LAW by the President. Then its constitutionality was UPHELD by the Supreme Court. Its DONE its over! Its LAW. Its passed every freaking test the GOP could throw at it. The GOP is telling the American people that they are willing to hold the country hostage if this Law isnt put on hiatus. This is their last hoorah, their last hand.

I didn't say it was both parties' fault, I said that the problem is much more complex than what it appears.

Yes, the Tea Party is causing the obstruction over the ACA. They are certainly to blame for the current government shutdown. Yes, the ACA is the law, and was upheld by the Supreme Court, so they can't get it out. But the problem wouldn't have existed without congressional redrawing by Republicans which created the Tea Party.

I vote Democrat mostly because I'm more in favor of their policies than those of the Republicans, but there definitely has been congressional redrawing on our part too.

Regardless, there is a very wide ideological gap rather than about "left" and "right" policies.

The interest and influence of the tea party is pretty much dead, had it not been for FOX news we would have probably never heard much about them.

A 2 party system is disastrous, but there would be radical change and probably economic collapse if we were to go to a one party system so it's a bit late for that.

The thing that interests me about the tea party is their ideals and their goal is to get the government back to a state in which it basically never existed. Once again, if their pitch was actually granted and the government changed to their will, we would have an economic meltdown. These sorts of major changes never go well for any political system.

I probably say i'm Libertarian at heart but I'm not sure anymore. I think Government should be less involved but at the same time we should be treating healthcare and education like it's something truly important. I don't want to say either of those are rights because when you say that it just lets the government regulate it and mess things up, but at the same time people deserve to be healthy and educated. poverty and lack of education is what is bringing this country to it's knees. It's a hard pick for me.

I wanna rage hard, but I can't. I'm all raged out from this headache inducing topic. It's especially irritating when someone posts with a far leftist post or far right for that matter.

To put things in perspective what Obamacare is actually doing for those who can't grasp how wrong it is to force something that can't be funded down American throats AND how anti-constitutional it is (just because something becomes law doesn't mean it became law by being bound by the very laws the country was founded under), I might have a way to word it.

Imagine if the government created coupons for Mcdonalds under the guise that it'd save money in the long run. Now imagine if these coupons actually ended up costing more than buying straight from the source. You tell the government you don't need Big Mac coupons because there is a cheaper option or you simply don't like Mcdonlads and would prefer Burger King. Instead of going "Oh, that's fine." Imagine that the Government decided to levy you with heavy fines for refusing to get Mcdonalds with their interference. It sounds ludicrous, doesn't it? That's exactly what's going on with healthcare. One big circus where no one is laughing.

Just because we have/have had it doesn't mean it's good, efficient, or effective. Just saying.
