GTX 1080 HoF Announced - Fastest GPU Ever!

We've seen some pictures of the pcb of this new card but galax has now officially announced it according to wccftech.

Galax is confident that this is the fastest 1080 (atleast until the Kingpin gets released) which would make it the fastest consumer GPU ever made, it has three 90mm fans and dual 8 pin connectors. As much as I love the Hall of Fame series (I own a HoF myself) I cant help but think this isnt the looker it used to be which is... disappointing.

Exactly why I'm waiting for all the issues to become revealed so NVIDIA won't fuck me over again!

EVER is such a bad word. Everytime Nvidia releases hjigh end gpu its the fastest because AMD cant compete at this lvl. SO when 1080ti comes out it will be FASTEST EVER ! , Titan will be FASTEST EVER !....

Yeah there's been fastest ever stuff getting released for decades, ever since there was one product more powerful than another one.  What do you want them to say?

I've always loved the look of these cards, but never wanted a white build for myself.

For some reason I liked the 980 HoF cooler design better. 
And the fact the shroud plastic and silver paint look cheap ... me no like sir.

But overall the card looks great. I love that white pcb.

They call it the fastest GPU ever without a single test, or even better, without even reporting the clocks of the card. Right.

It isn't likely to be the fastest card out there until Nvidia allows Pascal voltages over 1.25...

 

A 980ti still blows the 1080 out of the water on LN2.

There's a bunch of problems trying to get over 1.25 v which is really holding people back

People have tried that, soldering extra 8 pin on, soldering extra VRMs on, all have failed.

Not entirely... most haven't bothered upping the voltage limits in the new VBIOS's

Yeah I would shy away from the 1080 actually. This is first gen on node shrink. Wait for Volta

The comments about "fastest ever!!" in this thread, like, "fastest in this time period", "fastest ever ... until 1080 Ti / Titan are released", etc ... remind me of something I was researching recently - IPC improvements in CPUs.

 

First, this article on pcgamer says

So when are we again going to have the same generation-to-generation IPC improvements in Intel CPUs, as well as Nvidia GPUs (Pascal vs Maxwell is decent on paper but not quite THAT good) and AMD CPUs & GPUs?

 

And what about having the same performance per dollar improvement as was seen from 1989 to 1995?  In early 1989 my parents bought a PC with a 286-10 CPU in it.  The invoice I have shows the system price, and some individual components, but not the CPU.  (I'd guess the CPU by itself was probably $300-400 - can anyone direct me where to confirm it?  I looked at PC Mag on Google, I think it was, and didn't see individual CPUs for sale in the 1989 magazines.)  In 1995, they bought a 486-120 for $100.

That's an increase of whatever a 486-120 is over a 286-10, in 6 years, for probably a quarter the price.  What would it take to match that, AND the 8086 -> 286 IPC improvements?

 

And for power efficiency and noise, how long will it be before we again can have reference/stock $1000-and-under CPUs and GPUs that don't even need a heatsink, and run cool enough so you can safely touch the die when stress testing?   (And for the GPUs, I'd hope for single-slot low-profile designs that wouldn't be much longer than a PCIe x16 slot.)  Obviously custom overclocked ones would have cooling solutions of course.

I seriously don't understand what attracts people to Galax's GPUs. They don't look good, honestly, but maybe this is me.

You don't think some of the most known and best over clockers in the world didn't think of that? They've already concluded it is driver related or if it is archrecture related, Pascal will be a joke to OCers.

As it didn't o'clock as good, people have to remember IPC on AMD is usually better. Hence why a 100Mhz OC on AMD yields higher % gain then a 100Mhz on nVidia.
