Who's going buy the RX 480?

AlanAlan

I am planning to purchase this for a budget build. I am wondering if this is a good idea? Why are you guys thoughts on it?

Not enough information available to make an informed decision on it.

My GTX 1080 has already been ordered anyway.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

nah, I'm gonna wait to buy a high end GPU, like a 1070 or up

not midrange or low end

I mean, $200 for VR-ready graphics card... can't go wrong with that

I might wait on what NVIDIA's got for GTX 1050/1060, then decide (totally not an NVIDIA fanboy)

There is not enough info for me. However if it is as good as it sounds, I am going to go from single 960 to dual 480 crossfire :D

the EVGA SC?

Non-SC. I'm not a fan of factory overclocks if they cost too much extra.

It's a card that I would crossfire, but I really don't know what card I want, and I need a replacement

So is the SC. I paid like $619 for it as opposed to $700, and the better cooling will give me better boost clocks anyway.

correct :) i would of gone for the FTW at $680 but $619 is a good price for that model.

Depending on Price in Canada.... may be a good card until a high refresh rate 1440p wide screen or 4K monitor is available for a reasonable price.

I wouldn't have taken full advantage of a card like the FTW, so the ACX 3.0 card was good enough for me. Only reason I would have bought it was for the RGB LEDs, lmao.

Waiting for Vega... I hope it does come this year. I want something more powerful than a GTX 1080 and that has HBM2. Also, I don't want an Nvidia card because of driver-nerfing and poor async performance. But at the same time, I don't know if I can keep using a 280x until next year. I might cave and buy a GTX 1080 if one goes on sale in several months, but I really want a high performance card from AMD.

I think that AMD is the better graphics tech developer, but with a smaller operating budget and not the aggressive market attitude as Nvidia. AMD's brought us:

tessellation

Mantle -> Vulkan / DX 12

asynchronous compute

HBM

freesync

... and has a commitment to open-source technology, while Nvidia has a habit of making its tech proprietary and locking it down. And I feel better for posterity with an AMD card because I haven't heard of AMD cards becoming weaker when the next gen of cards and drivers release. Overall, AMD seems less arrogant to me, and is therefore a company I prefer to support.

I will be long to upgrade in August so I will decide then. We don't have any particular performance results but so far the RX 480 looks like nice upgrade from my GTX 770 so I really like it so far. Will definitely decide after reviews however I would take more expensive RX 490 if it will be available by that time and under $350.

They are voltage limited. So far all 1080s have problem to go above 1.25V even under LN2 with custom soldered VRM boards. (Tops at around 2.4GHz).

the 1080 uses less than 200W

you dont need massive power delivery like you did on a 780ti or 980ti
