Great card, no arguing, but I'd like to see a 490 at some point. :( and not talking about Vega.

So the event stated that two of these cards, each running at half-max can beat the much more expensive single 1080 by a hair; does that mean that one R9 480 running full tilt with proper drivers is actually faster than a 1080 since CF does not scale 100%?

I'd like to think this AMD somehow undercut Nv by that much..but that screams 'too good to be true'. The benchmarks are either probably biased or corrupted. Still, this level of performance per price is unprecedented.

your 980 is probably still under warranty. RMA it.

I didn't buy it, I got them both for free from a guy with 2 980 Ti's I had to fix the one and the other has the Corrupt memory issue. he won't even be able to RMA it as he bought it directly from America, shipping is a biatch.

If the numbers all add up then this is great for consumers.....although, I can't see it being great for AMDs bottom line (the margins and all).

Not to mention it sounds a bit too good to be true....it could be specofic to VR due to new VR cheats / technologies (much like nvidia). That is have no problem believing.

/assuming by a $400 card they're referring to a 1070.

smaller die, lower node. AMDs bottom line should be rather healthy even at 199 USD.

Anyone else noticed that AMD skipped DP1.3 and went straight for DP1.4??

The diff is 1.3 can do UHD 120Hz 8bit, whilst 1.4 can to UHD 120Hz 10bit....

Considering DP1.4 was released 1st of march this year.... yeah. either a typo or they really stepped up their game.

Then at 38:10 Raja talks about utilization on those cards. He says it's got more headroom (so basically, hasn't been fully optimized yet).

He also shows only 51% usage on the Crossfire setup. 51% is terrible utilisation on Crossfire, and shows very little scaling.

It was the same on the leaked 3Dmark graphs recently as well. Terrible CF scaling, that all indicates very immature drivers to me; as Crossfire usually has great scaling.

O6wEQiX.jpg

Also in regard to Ashes performance, Fury X Crossfire gets about 73fps on average at 1440p, and 87fps at 1080p.

AMD then mentions they have a lot more headroom for Polaris once they tune the drivers.

It was never confirmed what official Vega naming would be. As far as we know it could be called Titan Killer. No one confirmed anything.

According to every site out there it will support 1.3 and 1.4. If they mention only one it's 1.4.

so $200 is £138 so theoretically 3 of these are £414 which is right around 1070 territory.

Just curious how will three of these perform

prob bad with todays scaling. but maybe they improved crossfire driver since they showed that slide about 2 480 being better than 1 1080.

If it is between a 390 and 390X in terms of performance and Sweden doesn't get fucked over when it comes to pricing (like we got on the 6800K price) then I will be getting this for sure.

Stuff like this is why I'm not instantly jumping on Nvidia's new cards. I want to see AMD's cards on the table(hur hur) before I make any decisions on purchases. I say this as an unfortunate soul who bought the GTX 780 pre-price drop...

Still, and I know this is petty of me, but what's with AMD's GPU naming scheme? Are they just sticking random X's wherever they want? :S

could be they are moving the x from 480x to the r so it could be something like RX 480 and R 480 and have the number be the sole indication of the base card model instead of the old r5/r7/r9 AND the number after.

Why the hell is everyone getting so heated about this. Relax guys, the RX 480 is A THIRD of the price of the cheapest GTX 1080 you can get. Saying it's meant to compete with it is like saying that a nice sedan is meant to compete with a fucking Bugatti. Wait till the GTX 1060 comes out to see the actual competition.

the exiting thing is that it offers very good bang for the buck. we'll have to wait for benchmarks to be sure but that seems to be the case. and assuming they improve their crossfire driver (since they specifically showed the 480 crossfire being better and cheaper than a 1080) it could be a very good alternative for many mind range gamers.

But they could have charged more and had better margins since they don't really have any competition until the 1070 at $400.

Although, having seen the release I'm a bit skeptical of the performance and as such more than $200 might not be cost effective. AMD releasing it with a single benchmark running in XFIRE, in a highly AMD favoring game, just comparing it to a 1080 with what looks like different settings (not to mention he made it a point to say that they ran similarly and never mentioned anything about settings being the same), and only showing a 50% utilization makes me really worried about what a single 480 will actually do. I really hope I'm worried over nothing, but AMDs release choices really are a bit perplexing.
