AMD Teases Radeon RX 480 - Running DOOM at 1440p VSR

Seeing Doom running on a Radeon RX 480 and a 144Hz monitor suggests two things: First, that as been long hinted at by executives, AMD may indeed plan to attack the long-awaited new graphics generation from a more mainstream price point and letting Nvidia’s fearsome $600 GTX 1080 own the relatively niche high end. The Radeon x80 line has typically hovered around the $200 to $250 price point. And second, that it might be fast. The current-gen R9 380 barely hits 60fps in Doom at 1080p, according to TechSpot’s extensive benchmarks. Team Red’s showing it off at Polaris Tech Day on a monitor capable of cranking out more than twice that many frames—though there's nothing explicitly saying the GPU itself hits those lofty heights. It's likely just to show the card running somewhere above 60Hz in action.

 

Nice, nice, nice, nice... If AMD can nail that price to performance with Polaris, they'll be raising the bar for affordable graphics cards and it'll be a nice response to NVIDIA's release of the GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 (albeit, the cards aren't in the same 'tier' if rumours are correct). Another interesting thing is the change in the naming scheme. Could this be the evolution of the R9 to RX naming scheme, with X = 10 in Roman numerals? The fact it's also playing DOOM at simulated 1440p is promising as well.

 

Please note that the panel is 1080p and AMD is using 1440p VSR. Still, using 1440p as a baseline benchmark is great.

Now it can be time to hype things up.

 

To compare: a 1080 runs Doom at that res at 112 fps. Now it remains to be seen what actual fps numbers are, as a refresh rate of a monitor is not equal to the fps a GPU can push out. If the RX 480 runs it at 144 fps at 1440p with its graphics not turned all the way down AND it steps into that $200-$250 price point of the 380(X) we have a winner here.

Doom doesn't run on DX11 or DX12. Id is very much into the whole open standards thing, so they run Doom on OpenGL initially, and then when Vulkan becomes less buggy and more interesting they'll update to that.

For some comparison, this is what Techspot got in their benchmarking of DOOM at 1440p:

 

Staying above 60FPS at 1440p (which this tweet implies) would put it firmly in the realm of the R9 Nano/FuryX/980/980ti, if that is also running at ultra settings, and at a price-point somewhere around USD 250.

As the "leaked" performance on 3d mark put it up at r9 fury performance, I am sure that is close to where it falls when playing doom. I am looking forward to the new cards if they will have such great performance at that price point(sub $300). It is time to upgrade from my old gtx 650ti boost.

That level of performance for a rumoured TDP lower than 150W is really good. These really should help AMD push into notebooks.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the 480/X performs against a 1070/80 in DX12.

 

Oh this is just the 480, I wonder how much better the 480X is.

My GTX 770 is just a joke at this point. Struggling to maintain a solid 60fps at decent details.

Always, just don't expect the same framerates. The improvement will still be there but it might not be as much.

Always, just don't expect the same framerates. The improvement will still be there but it might not be as much.

It's funny cause the 770 should be performing better, especially under DX12

Running an OpenGL game to showcase their new GPUs is a very ballsy move coming from AMD, especially at 1440p / 144Hz.

I hope it's running only on a single 480, not in CF.

Well in most cases it's performing maybe 20% better than launch BUT still not that good.

 

It was pitched as a 1080p/1440p gaming card. With the emphasis mainly on 1080p but you could use it at 1440p.

 

I play at 1080p and I have issues keeping it at reasonable graphics details and reasonable framerates

It came also in a 4GB variant. You can understand my regret for not buying the 4GB variant. And at this point I wouldn't consider anything with less than 4GB VRAM unless it's a mobile GPU.
