I guess I don't particularly appreciate the conventional holiday approach.

New hardware pour moi.

Also, could we maybe have a poll @xgn?

Sig under construction.

Id choose a holiday over a PC any day. Its kind of a stupid question, holidays bring new experiences and new memories into your life, a PC, well its just a PC at the end of the day.

Needs money for car parts :P

I had this choice couple times in the past. Chose hardware.

For a computer enthusiast it's hard to justify spending your budget on something fun that will last couple weeks versus something fun that would last for years. I can always save up for a nice trip *after* I make sure I own the stuff I want first.

Depend on the location. If it's somewhere I desperately want to go I will, otherwise I'd choose computer almost everytime. It will last me much longer than a vacation anyway, and since I enjoy travelling by myself, all I do when I travel is taking some picture and walking around places abit, which is interesting but I have done it so many time already so...

I would argue that fresh new hardware is a "new experience" :) I don't need to see a "new" virtual world to enjoy my new GPU for example, just having it do what it does is enough.

New places can always be visited later down the line without impacting your daily life, but living without your baby does :P

Holiday, hands down.

If it was solely my decision? Hardware. No question. I find holidays to generally be more stressful than they're worth.

Unfortunately it isn't solely my decision. My wife likes holidays, and truth be told I like my daughter to see more of the world too so it usually ends up being a compromise.

Well for this summer I've just planned a week to visit a friend in England, short flight over and tickets to Coxcon are the only costs I have there. And some spending money. I really don't need much to enjoy a break.

So yes, hardware every time.

Case: Meatbag, humanoid - APU: Human Brain version 1.53 (stock clock) - Storage: 100TB SND (Squishy Neuron Drive) - PSU: a combined 500W of Mitochondrial cells - Optical Drives: 2 Oculi, with corrective lenses.

i actually dont like going on holidays. i cannot explain why, but i'm much more happy sitting in my back yard or a familiar place with an iced tea than sitting on a tropical island with an excentric whatever the hell they serve there.

EDIT: and for the price of a holiday i could turn my back yard into a tropical paradise.

I've been fortunate enough to do both this year, but it depends entirely on circumstance. i needed a new laptop for mobile work and that kind of takes priority over a holiday, since you need to work for the money to pay for the luxuries. if i had an adequate system and the option was a holiday with the other half or upgrade my system purely for leisure purposes id thentake the holiday. if for whatever reason i had no computer at all, and needed a full tech overhaul that would then last a few years i guess id have to skip the holiday for a year.

I would not argue that getting new hardware is not a new experience.

I would even argue that it can be a great experience.

But to me, the experience of seeing Harajuku for the first time was a much better experience than a new PC could bring me.

 Atleast as things are now.

Also, the sooner you visit a place the longer you will have the memories of that place.

I won't disagree, but I personally feel like getting all the material things you really want (or even need) in your life should be a priority, because they stay with you. Yes, your belongings own you in a way, but I can live with that. Vacation on the other hand, in my mind, can be postponed to a later date after making sure everything else is in check.

I just can't justify a $1000-2000 trip that will last 2 weeks when for example I have an $500 old computer back home. Given that I'm both a technology enthusiast and that I need a computer for work, that is.
