A good way to lose weight. Fast.

Hi.

 

I am a bit bigger in the stomach area and I really want to start losing that weight.

 

I am starting to cut down on what I eat but with a bit of exercise, it appears to not be working very well.

 

If anyone has any ideas or even stories to tell about their weight loss stories, that would be excellent.

 I gave up fast food for the most part, candy, and started eating more greens and fruit. I drink nothing but water. I lost probably 20lb since December. The key thing is cutting back on the sugars and carbs, fats and animal based cholesterol. 

 

A great example is I might order a hamburger at a restaurant but I never order fries. I get a salad instead. Stay away from fried foods, they are the worst. I wont lie its going to be a rough time. The hardest thing I had to give up was Twizzlers, I used to buy 2 or 3 big ass bags of them weekly. Pop wasnt too hard and I also gave up Caffeine under the advice of my primary care physician. Another piece of advice I will give you is this, you may fail, but never stop trying to get more healthy. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

the number 1 is eat healthy, you dont evne have to exercise you just need to eat health, count calories and dont drink pop, stay away from sugar too. if you exercise you might find yourself gaining weight and that is becase muscle weighs more than fat so youll gain some some muscle so don't worry about you gaining weight if you do choose to exercise (other than like cardio that doesn't really build muscle)

 

and it will take about 8 months to make very noticeable changes. at first from cutting out bad food you will lose A LOT the first few weeks but then after that your body will be used to the change and start losing weight slower. just dont give up and push yourself.

 

 

my mom lost 20 pounds her first 2 weeks then after that it was about 5 pounds every week for a while then a few later weeks she lost about 3 pounds a week.

 

and i forgot portion size matters. if you eat too many vegetables well thats not good either.

Just totally eliminate carbs from your diet, without carbs your body is forced into converting stored fat into energy meaning you'll lose weight fast. Problem is the entire thing implodes on itself once you eat any amount of carbs again.

 

Honestly to lose weight and keep it off you have to make a total lifestyle change, eat less, eat healthy, do exercise.

If adjusting your diet and exercising isn't helping much, it means you haven't adjusted your diet correctly or healthily enough, but the key to weight loss is "healthy dieting". Ditch your junk food entirely, soda, coffee, excessive milk intake and drink water. Lots and lots of water, this is very important! If you keep this up you will see an incredible weight loss within the first two or three months alone. 

     Now if you couple that with exercise, like walking/running or just biking, it'll help even more. Try to do HIIT with whatever exercises you do and do a set of planks in the morning every day (stretch first) and a good "trick" to do is drink cold/ice water  when doing heavier exercising. It cools your body down and makes you burn more! :) It took a month for it to start working for me but once I started on my program I lost 20lbs (more than I needed to for my goal) just ditching junk food and walking 4miles a day for a month and a half! haha

 

But remember that you need to lose weight healthily (because if you don't, you may not lose anything!), so talk to a professional before you do anything, because you can seriously harm yourself.

I know right! I've had a few tries of eating healthier but my dark side emerges and is just like, 'Just do it'.

Wow man, that is so good to hear! I will make sure that I eat enough, drink  a lot of water (I do that already so yeah) and make sure that I get enough exercise.

Yeah, my only gripe at dieting is temptation. I've just got to fight myself :P.

just dont eat sugary foods, you can still eat carbs as long as its like like 4 sandwiches at a time xD

You said that it appears to not be working very well.

 

Are you weighing yourself at least once a month since even if it doesn't look like you're loosing any weight, that loss might not be noticeable?

 

I'm pretty much in the same boat, but it's under doctors orders that I have to do it and the best start is to cut down on all the junk you're eating and decrease the amount you eat at your normal mealtimes which when combined with regular exercise should shift a kilo or two each month (I have medical assistance in the form of a pill that I have to take which binds with some of the fat and stops it from being absorbed, but it does have some side effects that can't be avoided).

 

If you want to do a large weight crash then only eat soup and you should eat when you're actually hungry (that was what my doctor said someone else did when they had to lose weight).

I am in the same boat. My day usually consists of cereal for breakfast or a waffle. Basically just sugar, but it kick starts the metabolism. Second is lunch. It is school food but I usually only eat half or not even the whole thing and some milk. For dinner I usually eat something like a burger, which is from our own cows we grow and let graze on grass only and some yogurt on the side and of course, with milk. I think my diet is fine as I have not gained weight from getting fatter, just growing as teens a teen. I have a limit for myself. If I ever hit 90Kg from fattness I have to do something immediately. Currently I am 5'11 and 80Kg. I would like to weigh around 73Kg so this summer which is very soon I am going to stay focused on a workout routine. I love riding bike, sprinting, and jogging. I am not done growing yet and am projected to be 6'4 so that will change the body image a bit. Does anyone know of a routine that isn't just eating pure raw eggs 24/7 and 100 sit ups?

Diet and exercise. Note diet =/= starving yourself. Just cut down on carbs and increase protein and fiber intake instead. The safe recommended limit on weight loss is 1lb a week, and you can't spot reduce fat! The only way to lose weight is to have an caloric deficit.

Meaning, replace your fatty and sugary foods with something more wholesome. I personally eat eggs (boiled or scrambled) in the morning with some oatmeal made with fresh bananas and strawberries, some toast and coffee. Gets me all the way through lunch.


If you haven't done so, cut out soda. I used to be an avid soda drinker, and I pretty much just drink water now. 

 

I'd also recommend starting light cardio. Try jogging a mile 2 times a week, or getting some bike riding in if you can. 

 

Also, another thing that people overlook: How many meals per day you eat and how much. Don't try to go the whole day on only 1 or 2 meals. I actually have 4 meals a day with 2 snacks in between. space out your food so your not eating a lot all at once. Many people tend to eat the most at dinner by not eating properly throughout the day.

There is this great formula you learn in chemical engineering called the mass and energy balance.  I'll explain, since it can be very useful:

 

in - out + generation - consumption = accumulation

 

You don't output any food/energy, nor do you generate any, so this simplifies in this case:

 

in - consumption = accumulation

 

The body can do some weird things with metabolism, etc, but it can't escape physics, and this is your ace in the hole.  If you can make that accumulation term negative, by some combination of eating less and exercising more, you will win :) good luck!

This is going to be a fairly long post but I hope that it helps.

 

Part 1.

 

The key to losing weight is actually quiet simple, calories in and calories out.

 

Your body needs energy (or calories) in order to stay alive and as various physics principles have shown, energy cannot be created or destroyed. So logically, you want to limit (not starve) your caloric intake and then transform the fat (stored energy) into something else like kinetic energy (exercising).

 

A big mistake people make though is that they think they can eat whatever they want as long as they exercise a bunch. While yes, it is possible to expend enough calories through exercise to offset the calories that you intake, it's quite strenuous. 

 

For example. 3 large slices of Dominos pepperoni pizza is 1,000 calories. Now if you're like me, I can eat 3 slices for lunch alone. In order to burn 1000 calories, it's estimated (not an exact science) that you would need to walk ~11 miles. My point here is that it's much easier to control what you put into your body than it is to burn large amounts of calories.

 

So how do you know how much food to eat? Try to figure out your basal metabolic rate (or BMR). Your BMR is the minimum amount of calories that your body requires to simply live. Here is a calculator that will ESTIMATE your BMR. http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/#result . Just plug in the numbers and it should give you a number. Again, keep in mind that this is an estimate. A thing to point out though is that on the average day, your body will use more calories than its BMR. Simple things like brushing your teeth, writing a paper, and even talking uses up calories. This is important when trying to figure how many calories you should eat as you don't want to starve yourself.

 

Now it's time to do some math. Let's say your BMR is 1800 calories. Add in various simple activities throughout the day that's another 500 calories. We're now at 2300 calories. In order to lose weight we want a calorie deficit. As noted before, there are two main ways to do so, dieting and exercising. A safe calorie deficit is about 500 calories a day. So what you could do is eat 1900 calories a day and then burn off 100 calories by exercising. 

 

-2300 (calories expended by your body) + 1900 (calorie intake from food) - 100 (calories expended from exercise) = -500 calories.

 

A question you might ask is where is my body getting the 500 missing calories? The answer is your fat cells. By producing a calorie deficit, your body is forced to invade your fat cells in order to find the energy it needs. If you find that you're not losing weight, that means your calorie deficit is not enough. This will be trial and error since every body is different.

 

Part 2.

 

Familiarize yourself with the different macronutrients. There are carbs, fats, and proteins. Each one of these has a particular purpose in the way your body digests and uses them. After reading that article, you'll want to get used to eating certain foods. Since you're trying to lose weight, most of your diet will revolve around lean meats and vegetables. Here are some that I like.

 

Meats:

Lean beef

chicken breast

salmon

tuna

tilapia

 

Veggies:

broccoli

spinach

carrots

lettuce

mushrooms

 

So that's a general overview of diet. Now it's always good to supplement good diet with exercise.

 

There are two major camps of exercisers. The weight lifters and the cardio group. Now there is a notion out there that people who want to lose weight should just focus on cardio. This is UNTRUE! Weight lifting isn't just for people who want big muscles. It is important that you lift weights as you will lose muscle mass when dieting but it's also important for people wanting to lose weight as muscles burn more calories even when you're at rest. So even though you don't lose as many calories weight lifting vs cardio (at the time of exercise) having good amounts of muscle allows you to burn calories even when you're not exercising and what's not to like about that?

 

If you're worried about not being to afford a gym membership do not fret. I actually recommend newbies to focus on 4 basic exercises that can be done at home.

 

1. squat

2. pull up

3. push up

4. crunches

 

A theme with these exercises is that they don't require equipment (well you'll need a bar for the pull ups) and they're all compound exercises. Your squat will target your legs and your butt. Pull ups will strength your back and biceps. Pushups will focus on your chest and triceps and crunches will work your abs. Master these exercises!

 

Onwards to cardio! Again there are two camps in the cardio camp. The slow and steady and HIIT (high intensity interval training). So think of it as walking for 2 hrs vs running (and resting periodically) for 30 min. Personally, I'm in the HIIT camp. Not only does it allow you to speed of your workouts if you're busy but studies have shown that there are various benefits to HIIT. People who do HIIT have shown that not only do they burn large amounts of calories while doing the actual workout but they also continue to lose calories as their resting metabolism is higher post workout.

Just to provide some context, I can do that (1000 kcal) in 1 hour at a fast walk (4 mph) at a 15° incline

To lose weight, you need to consume less calories than you use in a day

 

Cut down on calories, exercise more

 

There was a guy that lost weight even thought he only ate like chocolate for weeks, it doesnt matter what you eat, only that you eat less calories than you burn through exercise - that is how the body works

(of course eating healthy is recommended and will improve weight loss if your body isnt dealing with excess sugar and fat)

i've lost weight a couple of times but always re gain it, my diet is mostly rice and tuna, and for excercise is running/walking or just cardio in general.

Still had a couple of fatty foods here and there though

I haven't personally lost weight but I must say I feel so much better after giving up these few things.

I rarely get like maybe a brownie here and there or a small bag of candy I'll eat over a 2-3 day period.

I would imagine that diet is lacking a lot of variation in terms of nutrients and vitamins, no? Hopefully you supplement those foods with a bit more diversity?

well yeah, the school food in the mornings and for lunch, but that was my dinner :P no worries about vitamins , also orange juice  and lettuce with that meal

Push ups, running, Muay Thai, and eating organic. These helped me loose a tun of weight, I used to be a little bit on the obese side until I started doing this, now I'm in the best shape of my life, everyday I wake up and do 25 push ups, and run half a mile, this routine helps me maintain my fitness, fitness is all about routine, if you start something you must finish it. This is what I live my life by. anyways hope this helps :)

A great example is I might order a hamburger at a restaurant but I never order fries. I get a salad instead. Stay away from fried foods, they are the worst. I wont lie its going to be a rough time. Honestly to lose weight and keep it off you have to make a total lifestyle change, eat less, eat healthy, do exercise.

Do NOT eliminate carbs completely (honestly you shouldn't eliminate anything completely), sure that may work but it's not the best way to go.

Generally speaking, asking complete strangers on the Internet is never a good way to get accurate medical information.

I have a personal interest in science of all kinds and all the reputable sources say the exact same thing: if you have a health problem (and excess fat is) ask your doctor.

There are a few places where you can get accurate, science-based information, but these are meant to be a starting point, not an end.
