Dutch ISP Planning to Roll Out 10 Gbps FttH in 2016-2017

1000 Mbit en 10 Gigabit komen naar Glasvezel de Wolden

 

Bit older news but hadn't seen it posted yet and thought you guys might like it anyway. The Dutch ISP Tweak, who was also one of the first to roll out Gbps FttH in 2014, is now planning to go up to 10 Gbps. The speed will for now only be available in a single town(De Wolden, with about 25k residents) but it may be rolled out to other areas as well later on. The provider is expecting to connect the first customers by June 2016 and be done by Q3 2017. The full 10 Gbps package, including a landline and HD tv, will cost €95 a month with an initial connection cost of €200 and €75 in service costs and a safety deposit. 

 

In reality the service will actually be 11Gbps as they are planning to install both a Gbps connection for use by a Wifi router,  phone and tv in addition to a 10Gbps port dedicated to just internet. In line with this they allow customers to get up to 3 IPv4 addresses on their network. To actually run this though most people will be spending quite a bit more as they are required to buy the switch and all components required to get a 10 Gbps network themselves. A data cap is also imposed in the form of 10 times the average data usage of their Gbps customers. It also will not be allowed to be resold or run a datacenter off of.

In my opinion this is really awesome and when you look at what you actually get for it not that expensive. However even with my own Gbps connection from that ISP I've noticed the speed caps tend to be on the other side of the equation rather than my own so this would only get crazier with 10Gbps. Probably the only real way to leverage that connection is to have multiple downloads going on at once. While I principally oppose data caps it makes sense in this specific case and it is pretty high so not a lot of people should hit it.

Yeah agreed, the problem remains though that even with some fairly major sites enabling IPv6 a large majority of the internet remains IPv4 only. The ISP does provide a 6rd tunnel over DHCP though.

Gemeentes zijn wel episch slecht met communicatie naar deze bedrijven. Hier hadden ze vorig jaar de hele woonwijk open gebroken liggen omdat het gerenoveerd werd. Perfect moment om glasvezel aan te leggen. Maand later komen ze de glasdoos plaatsen...maar niemand gaat een pas-gelegde woonwijk openbreken om de kabels naar de huizen te leggen.

Gigabit internet...I don't even have that yet in my life...at lease I have 75/18 unlike one of my poor friends (He gets 1/0.1mbps speeds...r1p)

Don't know if I even need 10Gbps connection. I'd be happy enough to have 1Gbps instead of 20Mbps real/up to 50Mbps,  KPN offers now.

I few years ago my internet connection speed was no better.

 

No so much of a complaint. In most cases 20Mbps is not the best but not disaster either. Just cannot imagine how to use 10Gbps if becomes available.

I cant top that m9, I had a 3mbps until recently when we upgraded to 5mbps. At the same, the ISP was bought out and now I have DNS issues as well as more lag which makes multiplayer hard.

Been there, too.

Glad that AT&T was retarded enough to lie about being available where we live. Now we've got 25-35mbps up/~5 down from another ISP.

You can't really on any single service. It's more of a having the freedom to use it to the max and never worrying if your internet is good enough.

It takes 42 min by car for me to the border of the netherlands and I have to stuck at 8 Mbit. NICE!

Tbh I don't see the point. There's no way in hell you'll saturate 10gb unless you're running servers, so why bother running it to residents? 250 down is more than enough for mom and pop.

 

I'd kill even for 20 down.

I live in the Netherlands and many big ISPs still fuck the outskirts. I'm on 5mbit down and 1 up with no plans for any upgrade in the next 3 years. They are trying to roll out plans for using 4G (that would double my speeds)  in my area but that would cost me equipment + 60 dollars a month for 100GB.. So yeah
