HD 7950 for $50.00??????

Stephie_Girl

So I took a gamble on a "not working" HD 7950 on Craigslist.  The ad said it was not working.  He described it as it ran hot so he took it apart, and there was some grey goo on it so it took it off and put it back together and now it works for a few seconds then shuts off.  He said he was trying to play metro last light and it was lagging on max settings so he thought it was over heating.

I asked him how hot was it running earlier, he said between 140-170.  Well I assumed it was Fahrenheit and I was correct.  I took it apart, cleaned it a little and applied thermal paste (HE REMOVED IT AND DIDN'T REAPPLY IT) and I am getting load temps on a modest curve around 50*C.  He lived in my city too so it was a 4 mile drive.  My god I feel bad for the guy, but what a gain for me xD.

Well ignorance is never bliss. The guy should've researched the value of it used before he put it up for 50$.

Nevermind what I just said. I assumed it was used...Didn't realize that the guy thought it didn't work. My bad.

His fault for not learning wtf he was doing, who the hell doesn't know what TIM is but thinks that they can fix a GPU by taking it apart and removing something that was placed there when it was made. Seriously nothing on a GPU is capable of producing any form of goo. Big time score in my book Stephie it's a good thing he didn't kill it by running it without TIM.

why didn't that guy do some research online before jumping the gun and sell it.  Surely he could have done some youtube search and seen how to properly apply thermal paste on his gpu.  Some people have no patience whatsoever

It was used, he used it for several months.

I wasn't sure what was wrong with it. I mean I coulda told him how to fix it via craigslist, infact I asked him if I can take a look at it.  He said no he wants to sell it as is for $50 bucks. It was used, he said he bought it a few months ago but kept hitting lag spikes in Crysis 3 and Metro Last Light and saw it was overheating.  I was gonna try and help him but he just wanted some money back or whatever.  I made a gamble hoping he didn't destroy it by running it without any TIM but it seems fine.  I wasn't going to take it, fix it for free and explain to him 50-70*C isn't hot for a video card when he is a stubborn young kid that wouldn't listen to a guy let alone a girl...
