Discussion on alternative for no 3.5mm jack on IPhone 7

So I had to make a drawing to represent my idea but I'm thinking this is what Apple should do for the new IPhone instead of ditching the 3.5mm jack. They should cut it in half meaning the connector is just barely larger than the thunderbolt charging connector (unless they ditch that too), which would mean everyone has to buy new headphones (yay! good for apple) but the new headphones still work with other 3.5mm head phone ports (yay! good for the consumer).

What do you guys think of this concept?

I think apple needs to stop being a bitch and realize that phones don't need to be getting thinner.

I agree, but obviously there is no stopping them- if they're gonna do it they shouldn't be douches about it.

my guess is that it will be TB & bluetooth only

They have a patent for that headphone jack design but I think they want it all propriety.

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

This is less about making the phone thinner and more about forcing people to buy expensive proprietary equipment and adapters.

If they only wanted to make it thinner, they could have used a 1/16" audio jack instead (reportedly) doing away with it- those are still around on some wireless handset phones and recording devices. This is about selling stupid 'Lightning Beats' or 'Apple Lightning Earphones' for exorbitant prices, or even putting a $30 pricetag on an adapter.

Unlikely. Apple usually ditches things "prematurely". People said exactly the same thing when they dropped Optical Drives. And FireWire, and all the USB Ports.

 

What you're more likely to see is other brands follow and people just adapt.

 

 

As to the OPs suggestion - not a terrible one. I'd prefer a 2.5mm subminiature (or for Apple to create their own, like 1mm subsubminiature) since I think they could be more structurally rigid options.

Personally I already use bluetooth all the time for my android phone, but I would see why it might suck if they got rid of it. It's a good feature, kind of like the walkie talkie phones that sprint had back in the day.

Apple, please.

 

  • Make it as thick as it is, maybe as thick as the 4 was if you're feeling like giving us a treat.
  • Use the extra space to build on it a huge ass battery.
  • Whatever else you were going to do, it's not gonna matter.

 

Because we, the power user, will flock back to ya, in masses, if you build in a decent battery. Anything else will not matter, it's nothing revolutionary to ask.

 

Just build in a decent battery in your phones and leave everything alone.

Nah people are just mad but will get used to it. When they changed connectors everyone was mad because all their docks didn't work. Well now no one cares. The camera bump was the worlds biggest problem now no one cares.  If they take it off at first people will hate it but they will learn to deal with it or maybe Apple has a new technology up their sleeve for audio streaming like Bluetooth but better sound

Pretty soon Apple is going to remove speakers from their phones, because the phones are just too thin to even have them.  Hell, soon Apple is just going to not include any audio hardware on their SoCs.

The problem with the suggested connector, including using thunderbolt, is that the plug doesn't rotate on itself, meaning the plug and headphones/earphone plug can break.

 

I don't get why Apple doesn't do like Microsoft with the Surface Pro 4, where they could go thinner (see Surface Book tablet part), but don't because they want to keep the full size USB 3.0 plug, and put more battery in it.

Because of the OS, and no carrier/manufacture update block. Not everyone like many options. They want simplicity, solid, reliable and expected experience. Also, they like the support, and stylish phone design.

Not at all. Bluetooth and wireless is terrible for sound fidelity. They're not innovating, the technology was already there. They're just taking away features for style, which imo is stupid. Especially with something like audio which Steve Jobs was extremely involved in. I guarantee you, he would have never willing use wireless to listen to music with him being the crazy audiophile that he was.
