AMD FX 8350 or Intel Core i5 6400

The i5 6400 is a way better option over the FX 8350 in terms of performance and power efficiency. It's also more recent.

For Gaming, go with an i5 6500

For rendering and content creation, go with the fx

8350 period, i would pair it with a 380X/ GTX 970 or better gpu.  A GTX 960, would just not be worth pairing an 8350 with

An i5-6400 will outperform an FX8 in gaming; plus an FX8 will bottleneck a 970.

I would even recommend an i3 over any fx processor unless you aren't going to game at all.

I have a GTX 960 and 8350, and i wish i had  gotten a 970 because when i play games like Space Engineers, with lots of physics and tesselation, i can get about 50fps while looking at a planet from far away, with lowest graphics settings. But the 970 would do better, would it not? Also, i know the 6400 would do way better, AMD FX cpus are 4years old or something, but the 8350 would do better in multicore tasks, like Video rendering

It would do better, but it would still get bottlenecked in many games since the FX8 doesn't have the power to keep up with it. It does of course depend on the game as to whether or not an FX8 will bottleneck a 970. But an i5 is an all around better cpu for gaming. 

 

P.s. what's your cpu and gpu usage in Space engineers?

I've found nothing i cant run with my 960 at 60fps so far with my 4690k.

At max settings for most things(I say most because i haven't tried many AAA titles on it yet).

I don't play many games other than Space Engineers, to let out my inner engineering centered creativity, and GTA V because it is fun, and MODS! So you probably have more experiance with AAA

The 6400 isn't a great option, but it's still better than fx-8 series. 

 

I'm not experiencing bottlenecks that I wouldn't still feel with an intel chip in anything that I play.

First off, coming from an owner with a FX-8350 running at 4.8 / 4.9 GHz, go with the Intel option. Heck, EVEN I am considering on moving over the Intel platform (X99 or Z170).

 

You don't need a Z170 based motherboard, since your i5-6500 is a locked CPU multiplier chip.

If you don't plan to use the extra features Z170 provides, or upgrade to a "K" CPU in the future, then something like a H170 or Q170 motherboard will do just as good.

Looks good. Although unless you're planning on upgrading to an unlocked chip later on, then a Z170 motherboard is just adding to cost for no reason.

Drop the Z170, get either a B150 or H170 and i5 6400, unless you plan to buy a used 6700K in 2-3 years time. You can decide if 5-7% of raw performance (doesn't translate to gaming) is worth it to justify spending on a 6500 (imho it's not).
