Tell us your budget. Chances are high you could still get gaming on an Intel platform since you are considering a 8350 and a 960.

The G3258 and cheapest Z97 motherboard combo will cost you about $170 US and you can overclock to your liking, then pick up a 4690k or maybe even a 4670k in a while when you can save more money and sell/return that motherboard you already have. Intel isn't that much more expensive unless you go for a K chip right out of the gate

THat CPU is practically the worst investment possible, and what on earth would he need Z97 for? You can OC it on a B85 board as well...

stop giving him bad advice, that would run him more for less performance

The issues are as follows

2 cores, 2 threads meaning that when a game (GTA V, Witcher 3 and any other modern AAA title) WILL stutter. No way around it. Those games NEED 4 threads.

2 meh cores - locked and non-OC-able, performance is significantly lower than a FX 6300 or i3 4170 (both of which are similar in modern games)

Yeah I'm aware of the drawbacks of the Pentium chips, but as far as the upgrade path goes I'd much rather suffer on the slow train if I can just lower details to get by than get stuck on an sinking platform with no news of a new release any time soon. I just refuse to pay $400+ US for a 6700k at the moment.

The OP has less than 400$ and I don't think he is going to be upgrading soon by the looks of it. Not to mention he already bought a board.

He already got his parts, only needs a CPU, and his budget is £350

G3258 is not good for gaming. 2 cores only. Minimum of 4 cores. i3 would do okay-ish.

I'd say get an I5 and motherboard now with that $350, use the integrated graphics and save up for a graphics card. And then get a Polaris or pascal.

This thread is devolving fast.

OP go with a 6300 since you've only got a 970 based motherboard an FX8 is only asking for trouble.

Get a good cooler for it, the stock one is absolute shit.

As for GPU get a 970 or a 390 if you can, but if not go for a 380 4GB.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. I just checked on Scan and the 6400 with cheapest Z170 and GTX 960 is £384. It's up to you if you want to stretch a little over £350. That's only a slight bit more for the latest socket and CPU architecture.

6400 doesn't need a Z170 and 380 is better than a 960.
