Wot to get? FX-8350 + GTX 960 4gb or FX-6300 +gtx 970

severdnerv

I am about to make a purchase but dont know what way i should go first to get the most fps for the upcoming game The division and ive looked at videos and checked alot of things and i was kind of leaning towards going for the 8350 with the gtx 960 but then i was told to go for the fx 6300 and a gtx 970 instead so im confused as to what would preform the actual best but im kind of leaning towards the 8350 but then i dont know the graphics card in the 6300 is better.

im making my purchase in next couple of days so  any input is very much appreciated.

Don't invest into a 5 year old platform. Buy a Pentium G4400 and save for something like a 6600k. Get a decent motherboard and your upgrade path is golden.

Pentium would get creamed by a 6300 and stutter in games like no tomorrow. Just sayin'

I'm running a G4400 waiting for the 6700k to return to normal prices....and I will run The Division just fine.

You can get a G4400 for less than a 6300 FX Chip, and if you spend $100ish on a Z110 motherboard you can get a 6600k down the road and have a beast of a machine....and still have a 970.

Can you return the board? Also, 16GB of RAM is fairly pointless

I just bought a G4400 and I came from a 4770k in my build I just sold.

I agree it's not the smoothest gaming experience when stuff is cranked up but just lower a few things and it's exactly the same.

The new skylake chips are more than capable, and you could easily spend $30 more and get a mid-tier i3 and not even worry about it.

The issues are as follows

2 cores, 2 threads meaning that when a game (GTA V, Witcher 3 and any other modern AAA title) WILL stutter. No way around it. Those games NEED 4 threads.

2 meh cores - locked and non-OC-able, performance is significantly lower than a FX 6300 or i3 4170 (both of which are similar in modern games)

Skylake locked chips can't OC anymore. Intel locked it via firmware

While a Pentium's IPC is 30% higher, multi-core is 60% lower

Tell us your budget. Chances are high you could still get gaming on an Intel platform since you are considering a 8350 and a 960.

The G3258 and cheapest Z97 motherboard combo will cost you about $170 US and you can overclock to your liking, then pick up a 4690k or maybe even a 4670k in a while when you can save more money and sell/return that motherboard you already have. Intel isn't that much more expensive unless you go for a K chip right out of the gate

He already bought the board, case, and ram. He might not be able to return the stuff.
