the Google guy who broke the news that USB type C cables can be out of spec, even from OEMs, is back with a new story
this time not a pleasant one:

On my Pixel, both USB Type-C ports stopped responding immediately. Neither would charge or act as a host when I plugged in a USB device such as an ethernet adapter. Upon rebooting my Pixel, the system came up in recovery mode because it could not verify the Embedded Controller on the system. No amount of software recovery could revive the EC. Upon closer analysis, serious damage has been done to components related to charging and managing the USB Type-C port’s capabilities.
I directly analyzed the Surjtech cable using a Type-C breakout board and a multimeter, and it appears that they completely miswired the cable. The GND pin on the Type-A plug is tied to the Vbus pins on the Type-C plug. The Vbus pin on the Type-A plug is tied to GND on the Type-C plug.

open your eye before buying 3rd party USB cables

Ok, one thing is to use shitty copper and isolation on a wire, but other is to completely wired the thing the wrong way, that just no fucks given to QA, if i was him i would sue for selling a product that indeed does not work as intended, or at least put a complaint with the proper authorities.

It'll be a long time for me until I buy a usb type c cable, because I don't own any devices that use it (and I don't no anyone who owns such devices) so I honestly don't care. 

When the time comes for me to use/need usb type c, I think this will be fixed.

After years of people getting used to being able to pretty much use any ol' $1 cable it could take a while for that mentality to change.  This new standard has a lot more wires, and carries a lot more power.  Clearly, we need to give the same care and respect when buying type c cables as we would buying a power cord or analog cable, or anything else that could go wrong when cheaping out.

When the iPhone 5 just came out with the new Lightening cables/connector I thought I'd save a few bucks on non-legit cheap cables. They ended up arching on connection and after using it about 5 times it killed my dual port car adapter. Thankfully the iPhone was spared. After that I stuck to Apple MiFi Certified cables. Also discovered there was a microchip in official cables, which the cheap cable could not possibly have had.
