Microsoft has refined it's iPad app and released a more powerful version for the iPad Pro.

As per usual, you will need Office 365 to take advantage of most of these features (Which ranges from $54.99/year to $99.99/year).

Microsoft promised many of its newest and most powerful stylus-based features in Windows 10 Office apps like PowerPoint and OneNote would make their way to other platforms, and the company is now following through. Starting today, Office apps for the iPad and iPad Pro can take advantage of new inking tools for more precise finger and stylus drawings and notations. The company is also bringing its PowerPoint Designer and Morph tools, which let you spruce up and animate PowerPoint slides, from Windows 10 over to iOS.

The features are all the same perks Windows desktop and mobile users of Office have enjoyed since late last year. There's now a "Draw" tab in every iOS Office apps' menu bar, so you can access inking, drawing, and writing tools more easily. Office apps for iPad will also sense the approach of an incoming stylus — so long as it's an active stylus like Apple's Pencil — so you can quickly switch between, say, typing in a Word document to penciling in hand-written notes in the margins with a stylus without selecting anything in the app. You can also now use Microsoft's ink-to-shape tool, which recognizes hand-drawn sketches for objects like Venn diagrams and arrows and transforms them into perfect-looking graphics.

 

 

Microsoft is re-assuring and re-stressing that PC is king and will get Office features before IOS and Android.

 

 

All of these tools represent a major step up in Office's capabilities for new design and work-oriented tablets like the iPad Pro, all of which are tailored first for Microsoft's Surface Pro 4 before they're brought to other platforms

 

 

Great! I remember the days when you had to buy a PC or  a mac to run Office. (Those were some sad days since I had an iPad but no PC back then).

It's free. What could Microsoft Office possibly have over an open-source alternative that could possibly warrant the price difference? Other than a couple of cool widgets and gimmicks that only work in a tablet environment - on which I would never use a word processor anyway. If I'm writing an essay or a book, I'll do it on a proper machine that can natively use a full-sized keyboard and mouse.

ms office is better than open/libreoffice, in stability and functionality. However for most people it won't matter.

hmmmm. I think that UI looks a lot better than what we have on PC though, app wise. I always use the Desktop app on my surface because the Metro app was so ugly and slow.

There are free basic, Metro Windows 10 Office apps.

They have way fewer features. As much as the free mobile versions.

Personally, when I need an office suite for free a computer i have to go for Libre Office.

 

And if a school/job/work requires software then I have to use it.

 

On mobile, MS office is quite good.

 

I like MS Office. Only downside is all that telemetry.

 

Cost is a non issue since i could live with the free versions (except OneNote, the paid and free versions are night and day different).

I actually saw my first Ipad Pro in the wild last week, at a corporate meeting.

Nope they are not. I used to think like that, but, if you think deeper about it:

People that buys this device, have no interest in Microsoft devices in any case (or any other OEMs), else they would get a Surface Pro or another interesting offering from OEMs. So, if it means having a feature to compel its user to get Office 365 subscription, why not try get some money there? Better get something, than nothing.

If Microsoft doesn't do it, Apple will just copy it for its own office suite, and now Microsoft makes no money.

The strategy to keep everything on Microsoft side, just didn't work.

All didn't work. Everyone just copied it, and people stayed with the device they like.

It didn't help Windows Phone and didn't help Windows, and Microsoft lost market share.

So why not put everything you have everywhere, and try and make money from it? So far, it has been working. Microsoft almost lost Office as people switch to Google Docs and Apple iWorks. Having no Office, means companies would switch to these other choices, and they were. So, Microsoft pulled a last minute save by having Office everywhere, and companies and people continues to use Microsoft solution.

If anything, people will go "You know I use all these Microsoft solutions, maybe I should look at their device for even better integration as the OS is designed for it?", and have people switch.

Apple did the same with the iPod. It went no where being Apple exclusive. It only gain mass appeal once they included Windows powered PCs. While I have no data, I have no doubt it helped push sales of Apple systems. People knew what Apple could do, they like the device they use (iPod), looks really nice (at the time), people pay attention, and they probably decided to by an Apple system.

Do we need that much ad hominem being tossed around so soon, just because it's Apple?

MS knows that lots of institutions will buy iPads and now iPad Pros. Half of my graduating class in med uses the iPad Pro along with its medical apps, and everyone uses Office because Office is just that good for workplace/school and collaborative purposes.

MS would be foolish not to support what is clearly a popular and useful form factor. No need to insult those who chose to buy them.

As to the whole OpenOffice v MS Office - there's a good reason why no serious institution bothers with that or Google Docs. They don't hold a candle to what Office can do and many have workflows that Office supports far better. For me, I enter a lot of data in Excel and use pivot tables to no end. I'd never leave unless Google or OpenOffice made an equivalent that automated everything even more than Excel currently can.

I actually like the simplicity of iWork on my iPad Pro. Ideal for schoolwork for me. The only things that are missing IMO are full OneDrive integration (ability to directly edit online documents in real time) and MS Office font compatibility
