it's possible AMD dropped support for Coreboot in upcoming Zen CPUs

This year we should finally see the release of the highly anticipated AMD Zen processors that will hopefully better position their processors to compete with Intel. However, one of the unanswered questions about this next-gen platform is whether it will support Coreboot as an optional open-source firmware to replace the proprietary UEFI/BIOS.

Back in 2011 AMD announced they would support Coreboot on all future CPUs. AMD had been doing pretty good about supporting Coreboot on their processors and chipsets over the years, as frequently mentioned in my many Coreboot news posts.

While many recent generations of past AMD CPU/APUs have worked with Coreboot, it's not clear going forward. One of AMD's key partners in supporting Coreboot, Sage Electronic Engineering, went out of business last year.

---

what is CoreBoot?
Coreboot, formerly known as LinuxBIOS, is a free software project aimed at replacing proprietary firmware (BIOS or UEFI) found in most computers with a lightweight firmware designed to perform only the minimum number of tasks necessary to load and run a modern OS

Coreboot project (licensed under the terms of the GNU GPL) began in 1999 in the Advanced Computing Laboratory at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), with the goal of creating a BIOS that would start fast and handle errors intelligently
main contributors included LANL, SiS, AMD, Coresystems and Linux Networx, Inc, as well as motherboard vendors MSI, Gigabyte and Tyan, which offer coreboot alongside their standard BIOS or provide specifications of the hardware interfaces for some of their motherboards

devices preloaded with Coreboot (or derivatives) include x86-based ChromeBooks, Libreboot X200 and T400 (now rebranded Thinkpad X200 and T400), OLPC XO from the One Laptop per Child initiative, and ThinCan models DBE61, DBE62 and DBE63.

so.... i dun see any issues with this.

there is no issues with BIOS or UEFI that is so aggrevating and problematic that using Coreboot as an alternative is even worth it.

Other than the NSA implanting godmode spyware in your BIOS when you update it from the manufacturers website.

This was on the forums not too long ago if I remember correctly. Only thing you can do about it is either never update your BIOS (assuming that it wasn't infected during manufacturing) or use something where you can see and alter the code, like CoreBoot

Well, that's odd, specially for next gen CPU though. But not issue for me though, either way it may change later on.
As long as everything is good with instruction sets it will be fine.

We already know that this exists. No tinfoil hats here. The Federal government gave some scientists half a million to measure and study duck genitalia, you really think they wouldn't spend billions on getting spyware into peoples BIOS?

(they also spent $200,000 to see if cocaine makes Japanese Quail engage in risky sexual behavior)

If that wasn't enough for you.

Yes, they might have dropped it. But they also might have not! Dun dun duuuuuun!

How is this news? It tells us absolutely nothing. 'Hey guys, so just to let you know, AMD hasn't clarified anything about this yet.'

You know what's easier than buying and building a brand new PC? Petty larceny!

You actually believe they have to go through bureaucratic bullshit to get what they want? It's simple. Spy on the people in said bureaucracy, find blackmail worthy information, and suddenly you've got carte blanche to do whatever the fuck you want.

Also, they won't arrest you for it. They will file it away, and it will magically appear should you ever run for office on a ticket with values and statements that ever threaten their jobs.

I'd love to know where you live, because the US has a lot of extradition treaties.

What gets me is that the US has private prisons, that people don't always choose to get put in, so they have massive debt when they get out of prison.

Yeah, I like the EU a lot, the fact that they dropped all charges on Snowden amazed me, giving the US the middle finger basically. I just hope the UK votes to stay in the EU referendum.

oh, they have treaties with my country, but as recent as 2010 i think it was our Supreme court refused to extradite someone because they considered the prison system and its living conditions inhumane.

if you actually believe that your gov have that power, then you live in the US.

You see, EU is too much "hippies" and "commies" to play the same tune.

US tried to spy on germany, got busted, got into serious political shit for it.

US tried to spy on france, got busted, got into serious political shit for it.

end result?

EU is a lot colder towards the US now. Not only due to the espionage, but due to multiple cases of inhumane actions both domestic and abroad. Such as the hospital bombing in Syria or whatever.
