LAS VEGAS – CES® 2016 – Jan. 6, 2016 – TP-LINK®, a leading global provider of consumer and business networking products, today unveiled the Talon AD7200 Multi-band Wi-Fi Router, the world’s first multi-band router based on 802.11ad—the latest, most powerful innovation in wireless technology. Powered by the 802.11ad and 11ac MU-MIMO solutions from Qualcomm Atheros, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, the TP-LINK Talon AD7200 Multi-band Wi-Fi Router brings new, robust capabilities of 802.11ad to the market, delivering ultra-fast speeds of up to 4.6Gbps on 60GHz bands. It will be available in U.S. stores in early 2016.

 

TP-LINK is showcasing the Talon AD7200 Multi-band Wi-Fi Router as part of its new connected home portfolio, with smart home devices, connectivity products and accessories at CES in booth 31163, Tech East, LVCC, South Halls 3-4, Upper Level.

 

With the number of smart devices in the home steadily rising, consumers need more bandwidth to ensure seamless connectivity. Leveraging Qualcomm Atheros’ 802.11ad wireless technology, the TP-LINK Talon AD7200 Multi-band Wi-Fi Router uses a new frequency with untapped bandwidth and channels at 60GHz. It also utilizes existing 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, resulting in combined unprecedented 7Gbps Wi-Fi speeds throughout the home as well as combines 802.11ad with 802.11ac MU-MIMO to provide a step up in capacity. Superior to the standard dual-band structure, the router transmits locally stored media and content from the cloud drastically faster, ensuring that devices function at prime performance. With the TP-LINK Talon AD7200 Multi-band Wi-Fi Router, consumers can download an entire feature-length 4K HD video in about four minutes or transfer a thousand photos to a storage device in approximately five seconds, without any concerns about network interference.

a bit of a WiGig (802.11ad) history

the Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig) was a trade association that developed and promoted the adoption of multi-gigabit speed wireless communications technology operating over the unlicensed 60 GHz frequency band; the alliance was subsumed by the Wi-Fi Alliance in March 2013

version 1.0 of WiGig was announced in 2009, in 2010 they published the specifications, followed by version 1.1 in 2011

now, what is WiGig (802.11ad)?

this standard has nothing to do with 802.11ac! where as 802.11ac works on the 5GHz band, the 802.11ad woks on 60GHz (!!!)

it's capable of 7 Gbit/s, about as 8 times faster than 802.11ac

operating at that frequency poses it's problems

  • it's short range
  • cannot penetrate walls; even the slightest obstacle can cause a drop in data transfer speeds
but, the WiGig system has built in beamforming that allows it to propagate by bouncing off the walls and/or ceiling

hardy usable at that frequency, I think 20/30Ghz will do better, with gives it better range

to game or not to game, that`s the question

Not usable because the high frequency results in low range and the fact that it can`t penetrate walls or anything a little less thick

which makes it almost unuseable

to game or not to game, that`s the question

20 and 30GHz are already allocated for other stuff.

 

 

Really cool technology but I don't really see the point of using it in a router. I think the best use for WiGig is stuff like wireless displays or docking stations, not like really short range traditional WiFi.

you can connect multiple clients to a server / NAS without the need for cables - 2,3 laptops and a smart TV each working with it's own files

If all of them are like within a meter from each other, sure.

If it's just the NAS close to the router then you might as well just use a cable. It will be more reliable anyway and it's not like you will carry the NAS or the router away.

a year ago Samsung was giving 60Ghz wifi a range of about 200 feet with LOS, last I checked that is quite a bit more than a meter. In someplace like an auditorium or even a loft apartment that would be great.

If it is the demo I am thinking of, their antennas were like 3 feet square, and were being pumped a crapload of power on a track with absolutely nothing near or in-between them.

 

At 60ghz, 200 feet line of sight equates to about 20 feet with a wall between you, and 5 feet if you have water pipes in that wall. (Exaggerated, but it really is going to be a huge difference.)

 

I really do want faster WiFi to be a thing, but I really just don't see it being plausible with all the range issues I have seen just going from 2.4 to 5ghz.

But I estimate the speed to dropp about 500 Mbit/s per meter between the router and the connected device. If it even reaches 9 meter at all.

 

But this is the first time this much antennas concentrated on a smal area makes sense. For 2.4 GHz especially they are way to close to de great beam forming.

Mineral oil and 40 kg aluminium heat sinks are a perfect combination: 73 cores and a Titan X, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Oil

Well that really limits it's use. Reminds me of that Li-Fi technology I only briefly read up on.
If the device isn't moving at all you might as well run wired if you are going to essentially be in the same room, but maybe I just not creative enough to think of a use case scenario were this would be the best option.

Well no, there really isn't much you can do unless you're only a lan party or anything that would require all of the systems in one room. Maybe it could serve great to transfer entire game installs to all of the pc's in the room or something like that if you have friends over. If the pc's not in the same room, it's useless.

I think there are lot of possible uses. You can't think of it as traditional WiFi. Wirelessly dock a laptop or smartphone, WiFi direct transfer, wireless displays and stuff like that. Things that benefit from very high speeds and can be done peer-to-peer, without the need for a router.
