Just bought one for 87$, the price is fluctuating mildly, but i think it's a pretty decent deal

i heard the newer ones are better.

 

still, i'm staying the hell away from the only series of drives that i've ever had die on me. (aside from one series of drives with a manufacturing flaw that was replaced within warranty)

Green are crap

Red are made of freaking steel since they don't die

Black are iffy

i've seen a lot of blacks do really well, as well as a lot of the recent greens, the older greens die left and right tho...

 

no human in his right mind would use a hard drive that racks up 10K spinups in 4 years...

You should put Greens and 2013 1TB and 3TB Seagates in Raid.  xD

That would fail faster than a CX PSU ._. unless I power them with one, then chances are everything will simultaneously combust and the NSA will come down on me thinking I'm some sort of suicide bomber waving around a GTX 480 while yelling Nvidia AKBAR!

I, unlike you, have no problems with Blacks. It's 2016 bro

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Granted greens aren't the fastest or most reliable but I've used one as a storage device for years now and it's performed great for this purpose. Yes if you want an every day device look else where but storage these imo are fine.

My greens are doing well.

Had them over a year in raid 5.

Smart data shows they still have a low load cycle count.

Can Anybody Link A Virtual Machine while I go download some RAM?

Yeah, i just need a 3 TB hard drive for mass storage, and 87 bucks seemed pretty good to me, i'm not gonna pound the drive or use it for RAID, just mass storage.

IMO seagate sucks, all of the drives I've had from them failed on me. Especially my 2TB one, I had it for one year and lost all of my critical data.

5400 RPM? Not worth it. I hate my 7200 RPM drive.

 

I work at an ISP and we have lots of NAS arrays and the seagate 3TB drives are constantly failing. I literally just destroyed 30 drives that were brought to me over the course of 3 months.

 

 

I'm sure they'd work fine for a consumer use, like a gamer, but otherwise, I would just avoid the high capacity seagate drives.

this is drives for me:

Blue: died in 3 months. Manufacturers defect. They said warranty didn't cover their manufacturing defect

Green: most my drives are Green. I have a 1.5tb drive from 2010 and it's still going solid.

Black: 500gb since 2008 still alive

Red: The never dying drive. I dropped one down the stairs and no dead sectors.

Seagate:

The only one I've used was a drive for my laptop. It was a 500gb and it died in 1 year. That's how I got my second ssd ^_^

I run 15 3tb greens in a nas and have yet to have an issue some have been going for over 3 years. I also have 4x 500 gb blacks running in raid 0 in my desktop without issue for 8 months

I've had nothing but great luck with Greens.  :ph34r:

 

I use them for media and document storage as 5400 RPM is a bit slow for programs, but I have never had an issue with any of my Greens.

That is because they aren't made to be used like that, of course it is going to do bad.

So what is the best brand of drive to buy?

Any. The real question is what model. For just a general storage drive? A Seagate Barracuda or a WD Blue or really any 7200RPM 3.5 Hitachi drive.
