That is because they aren't made to be used like that, of course it is going to do bad.

We were using the 3tb drive made for NAS storage. They're specifically for what we were using them for and they still broke.

If you are talking about the Barracuda, they are consumer drivers hence why they are failing left and right, them are being used in a way that they aren't meant to be used.

i've seen a lot of blacks do really well, as well as a lot of the recent greens, the older greens die left and right tho...

 

no human in his right mind would use a hard drive that racks up 10K spinups in 4 years...

The three were within 3 weeks, the 4th is the one in here now, and it's super sketchy. 

 

3TB Seagate barracudas are hit and miss sometimes. The one I got is solid as a rock and way quiter than my black, but some people are reporting them failing very rapidly.

still, i'm staying the hell away from the only series of drives that i've ever had die on me. (aside from one series of drives with a manufacturing flaw that was replaced within warranty)

I think there was a bad batch a few years back, last year in the space of a month or two we had 10+ greens come back that were sold within a month of each other (fairly small business so not a huge turn-around) the pattern was fairly consistent and a little worrying as they were just out of warranty.

if they're all from the same store you might have just had bad luck and got a bad batch.

 

a while back we got a TV that was expensive enough to get free delivery and installation.. the first one straight up deddened (damaged in shipping), the second one caught fire (production flaw) the third one is still in use today, in an age where a 1080p flatscreen isnt 10cm thick, and doesnt cost €6000

i heard it was an issue with the early greens completely stopping, and spinning up each time a read or write needs to be done, and it basicly trashed the drives in months, rather than years.

thats why modern greens dont completely stop anymore, they just slow down.

I'm not sure on the specifics but that was enough to put me off greens, especially when I had 4x 3TB Barracuda's that never had any issues, the one I had the longest had been spinning for around 2 years and 3 months

One was from my own store, others were back from RMA from WD. 

The one I have now, is super loud, takes ages to spin up, and occasionally makes grinding noises. Yeah I don't store anything on that drive...

my 2TB one has actually been a really nice experience, the loudest thing in my system right now is the 250GB "spinning rust" from seagate i added for linux. and even that is significantly more quiet than the average computer.
