How to remove ads on Skype

This thread will show you how to remove the super annoying ads on Skype.

Source: makeuseof.com

1. Open control Panel > Network & Internet > Internet Options > Security > Restricted Sites

   a. Block

      i. apps.skype.com

      ii. g.msn.com

2. Hit "Apply"

3. Relanuch Skype

You have blocked ads on Skype, but the placeholder is still there. To remove placeholder:

1. Navigate to your primary Hard Disk > Username > AppData > Roaming > Skype > Skype ID folder

2. Open a file called "config.xml" with Notepad, or any other word processing application.

3. Press CTRL + F

4. Find AdvertPlaceholder

   a. It should read <AdvertPlaceholder>1</AdvertPlaceholder>

5. Change that 1 to a 0

6. Save

7. Quit Skype, and relanuch

You have removed annoying advertisements from Skype!

See the original post here.

Maybe web.skype.com will be helpful. Try it

You could use Trillian. It supports multi-logins at the same time, to Skype, ICQ, Facebook, etc etc... And is actually a proper IM client, even better than what MSN was before MS shut it down in favor of Skype.

The default theme isn't great, but it's customizable and there's plenty of themes found online for it.

Couldn't you put those sites in your hosts file in Windows as well to get the same effect?

Sweet, this worked great.

One addition you should make: Tell the reader to open the config.xml using NotePad. You can't edit it in Internet Explorer which opens it by default.
