[STEAM] 3DMark 80% off - $5

CommandMan7

Something that gets overlooked often is the software side of steam, and for right now you can buy the full version 3DMark for only $5. I think this deserves a seperate post from the other steam sale posts because most people don't look at the software tab in steam, so I wanted to bring this to attention.

Anyone want to explain to me the purpose of paying for a benchmark?

Customisable settings, 4k (with 3DMark iirc) and supporting developers.

But why would I pay actual money for something I'm only going to use a few times? I'll use it once or twice when I build a new rig, but it's not like I sit there and run it all the time for no reason just because I like it.

It just seems like a really bad value to pay $5 for something I'll use on rare occasion. I don't get why people get 'excited' to see a benchmark for $5.

It's always fun to try and chase these achievements.

Always fun to see your rig crush a few Titans as well.

Its great for those of us that enjoy overclocking and constantly tinkering with components/settings. Not everyone builds a pc and then is done with it. I've already upgraded mine a dozen times (at least) since February. Its a good test to see how much performance you can squeeze out of a system, and also i use it, as one of many methods, to check stability for overclocks.

I suppose if you're constantly messing with overclocks. Even then, I don't see why Cinebench and/or AIDA64 wouldn't cut it.

It's pretty good for graphical stability. And I hate the damn demo video that takes for ever which makes me wanna buy it

its nice to have a variety though.  Cinebench and AIDA64 are great, but not enough by themselves.  And I dont really care for the GPU stress tests in those, especially AIDA64.  The paid version of 3d mark you can loop whatever type of test that you want, so if you only want to stress gpu or cpu or both at the same time you can, for as long as you want. as well as full settings control and like "winningsince1337" said, getting rid of the demo video is almost worth 5$ haha

And its fun to try and beat other people's scores that're using your same hardware.

It's not for everyone though!

Just because you don't use it doesn't mean that it's not helpful to others. I don't go out and buy 3d CAD software because I'll never use it, but some people absolutely adore it.

Isn't the point of the demo to get your card nice and hot first before doing any actual benchmarking though?

"I'd imagine there's exceptions to this trend - but just going on mine and my acquaintances' purchase history, we've found that budget cards often require you to turn off certain features to get slick performance, even though those technologies are previous gen and should be having a negligible impact" - ace42

For us, it's more features.  Remember that the target audience for this type of software is not only consumers, but also people that run benchmarks for a living as part of their job, like LTT, Anandtech, Tom's Hardware, etc, where it will be relied on more, and will be used far more often.
