Smartphone OS Market Share, Q2, 2015 - IDC: http://www.idc.com/prodserv/smartphone-os-market-share.jsp

Fact + Opinion: It's true, Microsoft is the world's largest software manufacturer, what's even worse is that they're not on this list. With Microsoft releasing their core productivity apps (especially Office 365 apps) to Android and iOS are we expecting this chart to change? After all, it's the most used and highly rated productivity suite out there.

The Google Productivity Suite (Docs, Presentation and Sheets) are doing very well but iWork on the other hand...

"Notably absent is Microsoft, one of the largest software makers in the world by revenue."

It's really no surprise that the most used app was Facebook with second place going to YouTube (virtually considered in its own right to be a search engine).

Microsoft has the largest share of the desktop platform with Windows claiming over A STAGGERING 90% of that market share; and with the help of Project Astoria (bringing Android apps to Windows) and Project Island-wood (bringing iOS apps to Windows) could we see the Mobile OS market share tip in Microsoft's favor and therefore placing them on the chart?

"But Microsoft is one of the biggest software companies on the planet. To not be in the top 10 on mobile has got to hurt."

Opinion: So far the only reason why app developers would look at porting their apps to Windows is because of the massive 90%+ market share - this means that they can reach even more people on the desktop (courtesy of Microsoft Store on the desktop).

They're not on the list because they don't have a large mobile app user base. They're as big as they are because of Windows, plain and simple. To discredit that because of their poor mobile presence is dumb.

The thing that I'm confused about is the amount of people still using Apple Maps. It may have improved, but I still find Google Maps to be superior when my mom and I are traveling.

Microsoft's biggest problem is that they seem to enjoy spending most of their time culling previous features from their OS, fighting piracy, changing crap that doesn't need changed, and not releasing it all for free while continuing to make money off of proprietary apps and generally becoming the Valve of OS developers.

Although I own a Windows Phone, it's actually kinda sad.

They used to in WP7, there was legal thing and YT pulled the license from MS so they had to take it down from the store.

(I remember reading about it sometime ago). I think it was because Google didn't give them clearance to publish the app.It was like a breach of a patent and Microsoft never got permission to publish.

So proud I don't have a Facebook app on my phone.. But

On a Windows Phone? The one in Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2, Lumia Denim is almost like the one on Android and iOS. It just has refined design (by Microsoft). But in Windows Mobile 10, the Facebook app is partially designed with input from Facebook (as they said they'll be making official Facebook, Instagram and Messenger apps for Windows 10)

Opinion: So far the only reason why app developers would look at porting their apps to Windows is because of the massive 90%+ market share - this means that they can reach even more people on the desktop (courtesy of Microsoft Store on the desktop).

There is no point in making Metro apps though if all you want is to reach desktop/laptop users.

Most apps already have a win32 program or a web based one. Both of those can be accessed on regular Windows, where all the users are. I don't know anyone who uses the app store for their laptop or desktop.

So developers would spend time and effort developing a metro app, which is far inferior to win32 in terms of performance and functionality (the framework simply don't allow the programs to be as good as win32) and the result would be that customers ignored it.

That's the problem Microsoft is having. They are trying to boost their failure of a mobile OS by leeching of the success of desktop Windows. It reminds me of how Google tried to make Google+ leech of the success of YouTube. It won't work for Microsoft because we already have better alternatives on the desktop.

They did make one. A baller YouTube app too. You could even download videos for offline playback. Google shut it down. The current official YouTube app from Microsoft is just a web wrapper for youtube.com.

I reckon when Project Astoria and Project Island-wood come out it's gonna provide a greater incentive for developers to develop for the Windows Store. There's a service on their Dev website that scans the app's APK then notifies the developer of things that need to be changed so they'll work on the Windows platform.

As for Microsoft riding off on the success of their desktop OS, would it make much of a difference? It's all the one Windows (Universal Platform). They may think that they're developing for the mobile platform but now they may be able to reach people on the desktops and other Windows devices (Eg: HoloLens, Xbox).

Luckily we can still have MetroTube or TubePro with the same functionality as you described.
