Windows 10 “Upgrade now” or “Upgrade tonight” Ad

1st question, the same as 7 and 8 (more or less), which means it's a pain, and if you updated from an oem license good luck

 

2nd it has improved a little but I can't use it to fine stuff on my friends PC

i've never had trouble with swapping under W7. I've swapped mobos 5 times with my oem W7 license. There are currently 2 computers running full versions of windows off it. I have never had to phone MS and once I had to click activate and retype the key.

They're pushing Windows 10 really hard because they want to unify under one operating system so it's easier for devs to make games and programs without worrying about supporting outdated operating systems. Some Luddites are so extreme they're still on Windows XP ffs.

Maybe Microsoft should take a hint and instead of trying to trick people into upgrading they should just ask "do you want to upgrade yes or no" and then respect if the user says NO.

Oh I forgot, Microsoft's new strategy is that the users don't have any say in what happens to their computer anymore.

 

 

 

MS is pushing 10 because they don't want to continue to support the older OS. If all your users use one version of the product, it is so much easier to just have a full team work on that product than have them switch back and forth. Aside from a few things, Windows 10 isn't even that bad compared to all the hate 8/8.1 got. It's the same idea as people still using the old Windows XP, MS doesn't want to spend time fixing an outdated OS. They don't want you on Windows 7 if Windows 11/12/13/whatever comes out.

The continued support for older Windows versions is already set in stone. It doesn't matter if 1% of users use Windows 10 or if 99% of users use it. They will still have to continue supporting Windows 7 with patches.

I think it is more likely that they are just trying to changing business model from "we will sell you a license" to "we will give you the OS for free but harvest your personal data, show you ads and also sell apps in an app store".

As for why they are more aggressive, there might be some quota they are trying to meet because they made a promise to investors. Or maybe they think developers will actually give a damn about metro apps if lots of people got the capability to use them.

 

 

 

 

How does W10 handle mobo swaps? I've read quite a few stories of people switching mobos and not being able to activate W10 again with MS giving no help. I though one of the benefits of W10 was stuff was tied to your acc and not your hardware so you could just deactivate the old computer and reactivate the new computer. 

It seems to be a coin flip. Sometimes it works without issues and sometimes you will have to call up Microsoft to have your key renewed.

 

 

Has the search bar in the start menu been improved at all? When I tried W10 out the search bar was worse then useless and I just learned where everything was and completely ignored it until I went back to W7.

I have not noticed any difference between the launch and now. What was your problem with it? The problem I had was that it was bringing up the shitty metro apps like "Photos" when I wanted to open Photoshop. I solved that by forcefully uninstalling all the worthless apps via PowerShell. They came back with some update though so I had to do it again...

In some exceptions they have to be. Just ask the US Navy, when the cost of operating procedure can be negotiated to the lowest bidder (aka MS for providing extended, "extended" security updates exclusively for them), you can be damn sure they're going with the lowest bidder instead of rewriting much more expensive code that runs the...workstations *cough* ICBM's *cough*.

And even though I use Windows 10 and I do recommend it, I think that forcing people to upgrade is a bad thing. Windows has an EULA, what if I disagree with it?

I like Windows 10 but I find it very annoying when my PC at work which runs Windows 7 pops up with this window ever so often. 

 

Its a work PC, with a business licence

if you dont have access, go complain to the IT department, it's easy to fix

My IT department wouldn't have a clue what I was going on about and would send one of our specialists out for it which is pointless.

No. The dates as to when support ends has nothing to do with who migrates to the new OS, which is evident from the XP support. If you're not going to upgrade early, the likelihood of you upgrading doesn't necessarily increase as it goes.

Or they realize how big of a fail it is and try to cover it up so they can shove windows 10 products down your throat. Sure there is 110million devices or whatever but there is still more windows 7 and 8 users

Most ATM,POS,etc... here run on XP and most of their hardware aren't compatible with W10, and not because of drivers...

Our hospital just acquired a brand spanking new General Electric CZT Ventri SPECT camera. The machine is worth almost a million dollars (and the best part is I get to use it). You know what it runs under the hood? Windows XP, baby.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

No. The dates as to when support ends has nothing to do with who migrates to the new OS, which is evident from the XP support. If you're not going to upgrade early, the likelihood of you upgrading doesn't necessarily increase as it goes.

"Not wanting to support the older OSes" has nothing to do with Microsoft's incredibly forceful attempts at making people upgrade to Windows 10, because they will have to support Windows 7 regardless of how many/few people upgrade. That's what I said. Even if 99% of Windows 7 users install Windows 10 Microsoft tomorrow they will still have to maintain Windows 7 support exactly the same way they are currently doing, all the way until the 14th January 2020.

I have not noticed any difference between the launch and now. What was your problem with it? The problem I had was that it was bringing up the shitty metro apps like "Photos" when I wanted to open Photoshop. I solved that by forcefully uninstalling all the worthless apps via PowerShell. They came back with some update though so I had to do it again...

When I searched for files or programs I would get unrelated stuff and bing results. It was like searching on bing. On W7 I can type in wow and get the launcher as the first hit. W10 seemed to only find all the files related to running the game, the ones that can't be opened by standard programs and give you the prompt to search for one online. So after a few failed searches I stopped using it as I knew where all the files were it just took a few more clicks.

You can set default applications to avoid the universal apps. How well that works, I don't know but the option is there.

Regarding Search. It's a bit hit or miss. When it works, it works pretty well but it doesn't take much to bug out.

I've seen it happen when doing upgrade from previous versions or even changing system language completely broke the search results. Reseting the index did nothing.

I finally fixed it by altering the folders included in the index (pretty much unchecking and checking boxes). It shouldn't be as hard to fix as it actually is.

It has a lot to do with your post. You stated they will maintain Windows 7 support until that date. I used XP as an example of saying that even when support ends, people will then want the support to be extended simply because they didn't upgrade. It's not about whether people keep using it until the end date. It's about quickly getting them away from the OS before those users continue to use it after the end of support.

windows store is just about the easiest thing to ignore and you can turn off cortana...

 

that being said I haven't upgraded to 10 either, but I am on 8.1... so technically I have windows store, but like I said, its just there hidden away in some menu...  only time I'm ever aware of windows store is when someone says thats a reason they don't like 8.1 or 10

I got the netflix app on the windows store, it works pretty well, there's some things I hate about the app and that's that but it's not Windows Store's fault. The only thing that's wrong with the Windows Store is the lack of good apps for it. Of course when you go on the windows store it looks like shit, there's only a few decent games on it but no major ones yet, well I guess Minecraft counts as a major one.

You can turn the Bing results off (although it will still connect to Bing whenever you type something). I don't think there has been any changes to which local filed will show up.
