Bought a RM850, should I refund it?

crystal6tak

Full back story:

Recently got a new build. Got an Asus 980 Ti Strix and Corsair RM850. The 980 ti coil whined really badly. Got a replacement and still coil whines as badly. Did more research and apparently by RM850 is garbage. And that I should have gotten the EVGA 850W G2 to begin with. As of now, I still have my old 980 Ti Strix and the new replacement unit (due date for sending back the old one still 23 days away. ). However, I only have 8 days left before I can't request a refund for my RM850. If I do decide to refund it, the EVGA G2 costs 50 euros more, so I want to make sure there's enough reason for me to refund and upgrade. So, the questions I'm asking is:

1.) Is it really that likely for PSU to cause GPU coil whine? Does upgrading to a G2 have any chance in stopping the 980 Ti's from coil whining? I have researched and have found very few (like, 1 so far) of reported cases where RM850 caused GPU to coil whine and replacing PSU helped.

2.) Even if upgrading to the G2 don't solve the GPU coil whine, is the RM850 really that bad? I mean, I ran 3D Mark 11 and have tried stressing both GPU (980 Ti SLI) and CPU (4790K) at the same time. No random shutdown or any issue whatsoever (Except some artifacting in early test, although that seems to be gone now). Perhaps it's a long term thing? That the unit will degrade over time due to it's lower quality component? Is the G2 really that far superior over the RM850?

All responses are appreciated, thank you!

if it's not the GPU it's 99% sure it's the PSU

EDIT: RM are overpriced for what they are - not worth the cash.

try your luck and see if the G2 reduces coil whine

if it doesnt, you at least get a longer PSU warranty

make sure the noise is coming from the PSU and not the GPU itself before you do anything...

Both these things can produce significant coil whine noise.

My strix does not whine but the fans on this thing man...garbage...complete garbage...loud as fuck and the card has a hard time runing bellow 75c...DEEPLY disapointed by this card...very powerful though and sexy as fuck...but loud an hot!

Not in Spain. The RM850 costed 151.85 euro with shipping. G2 costs 194.26 euro with shipping.

Antec High Current Gamer, SeaSonic S12G/G-series, Super Flower Golden Green/Leadex - EVGA G2/B2/P2 - all better than the RM

Didn't even consider the warranty...interesting.

As far as I can tell, both 980 Ti Strix are definitely coil whining.

With further inspection, I noticed the RM850 is also coil whining. But it seems a lot less. Have to put ear next to the PSU to hear it. Or it could be that the two 980 Ti Strix's coil whine are so loud it's drowning out the RM850's coil whine... Don't know.

The RMi series when on sale are amazing and if they were just a bit cheaper they'd have a 10/10 from Johnny Guru

Not an RMi it's just RM

To OP, the Evga G2 is one of the best PSUs on the market so I would uprgrade if you think the psu is defective because why not?

If it is too expensive in spain try the xfx TS Gold, or any of the other PSUs in the top tier of the list in my sig

If Corsair honors the return period for coil whine then sure, return it and buy an EVGA GQ/G2/GS.

Leadex is the same platform as the G2 (both are made by Super Flower) - get the cheaper one

Just found out, there's a SF-850F14MP (Leadex 850W Platinum) being sold for 194.83 euro. Wth, isn't platinum above gold? Is this too good to be true? Sold by the same seller selling the 850F14MG (Leadex 850W Gold).

Should I go for the leadex platinum then?

Platinum has about 2-3% higher efficiency mainly but it is something to brag about and it does feature tighter voltage regulation :)

Hi, sorry to poke you with another question but :P, just wanted to confirm, when you say same platform, does that mean it's just a rebrand? Or there's actual differences? The leadex looks really nice from the price perspective but ultimately I'm fine with paying more if the G2 is actually better.

they are exactly same as far as build quality goes, they are just sold by different brands.

The site has changed....

The G2 is a Leadex Gold with an EVGA sticker on it

My RM750 does not make my card whine, tried monitoring your fps? Order a new psu, test the card with that, if the noise is still there try a different room, if the noise is still there, it was most likely a bad batch. I got 3 bad EVGA powersupplies in a row, they were from the same batch. Shit happens
