So you're saying that everyone shares your mindset on this topic and no one could need a better CPU than a i5 2500k, cool nice to know, by that logic everyone should by an i3 and a GTX 980 because no way you would ever need more CPU power.

I plan to upgrade to zen as long as it's faster than my current chip. Just thought i'd be an example to prove your point

CPU narket works diffrently then GPU narket as people most of the times upgrade their GPU's, people that buy CPU's most of the time get it with new PC

Lisa Su (and maybe her predecessor) has done a good job so far. I still don't understand why their GPU department is being underestimated so much. It is very undeserved, but I guess it has to do with NVidia's proprietary technology platforms, creating vendor lock in, that consumers really wants to buy into (really dumb for a consumer to do so).

 

However AMD still has to prove their worth in the CPU business, and if (when?) they do so, it should rub off on their GPU business too I'm sure.

 

Either way we need a much stronger AMD, to keep Intel and Nvidia in check. Because both of them are ripping off the consumer as is.

I'm sorry but there is no way that zen will be great enough to make people sell their perfectly good CPU for a new zen CPU. A new processor doesn't give you the same bang for your buck that a gpu does. They would only capture some people upgrading from 7-8 year old CPUs. My 2500k still has a bunch of life before I will upgrade.

By the time Zen comes out the 2500K from 2011 will be a 6-7 year old CPU

AMD has been two years from profitability for over a decade. At some point it either becomes a reality or they go into chapter 10 bankruptcy protection. I don't really care which but the slow death is soooo boring.

I'd like me a Zen chip for my next pc. The A10 7850K is plenty fast on Linux for most tasks (pretty sure at 4477 MHz it rivals at least some lower-end i5s) but for some, it struggles a little. Especially OpenSCAD rendering is something that could use a boost tbh.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was mostly due to their gpu line - they really did a good job with the pricing this generation.

There's what, a total of 3 of them? Last one released 9 months ago.

Underhanded tactics, yes, but there's about 50 videos just talking about current going-ons rather than direct attacks at Nvidia.

Yeah that part is really all that matters, as zen will either save them or destroy them.

Graphics sales will not let them sink. Even if they stopped making processors in general, they could completely focus on GPU and do very well. You have to give them credit though, AMD provides products in two different markets, and still put up a fight in both (depeinding on how you look at it) while two separate companies still compete with it (or at least one, Intel has kind of pulled away by now).
