I wouldn't be surprised if this was mostly due to their gpu line - they really did a good job with the pricing this generation.

actually , if you look at market shares , the cpu part of amd is doing better than their radeon tech group ...

Graphics sales will not let them sink. Even if they stopped making processors in general, they could completely focus on GPU and do very well. You have to give them credit though, AMD provides products in two different markets, and still put up a fight in both (depeinding on how you look at it) while two separate companies still compete with it (or at least one, Intel has kind of pulled away by now).

yes but they put a lot of money into zen, it might not destroy the out right but zen failing would force them to sell assets

I'm sorry but there is no way that zen will be great enough to make people sell their perfectly good CPU for a new zen CPU. A new processor doesn't give you the same bang for your buck that a gpu does. They would only capture some people upgrading from 7-8 year old CPUs. My 2500k still has a bunch of life before I will upgrade.

 

Yes because processors are only good for gaming and literally nothing else so it doesn't matters.... :rolleyes:

Server wise companies might go AMD vs a Xeon. IF it is good enough

Lisa Su (and maybe her predecessor) has done a good job so far. I still don't understand why their GPU department is being underestimated so much. It is very undeserved, but I guess it has to do with NVidia's proprietary technology platforms, creating vendor lock in, that consumers really wants to buy into (really dumb for a consumer to do so).

 

However AMD still has to prove their worth in the CPU business, and if (when?) they do so, it should rub off on their GPU business too I'm sure.

 

Either way we need a much stronger AMD, to keep Intel and Nvidia in check. Because both of them are ripping off the consumer as is.

If 'Zen' manages to be excellent with IPC and prices for 8-core is reasonable I'm getting one for my self.

I hope it's so.

I just hope AMD is going with NVMe support. It would royally suck if they didn't. As someone who can actually use that horsepower to gauge parallel scaling, it would be nice to have the disk I/O speed to match.

He did a lot of incompetent things, but remember that Arctic Islands, ZEN and the finfet stuff, all started when he was still CEO. Either way, Lisa Su seems quite competent, so I'm excited to see where things are going.

To be honest, I doubt they would have gotten any tractions with tablets due to intels bribing contra revenue program.  ;) EDIT: And Intel wouldn't even be their biggest worries.

It is a much more competitive market place, with lower profit per unit sold. Good call to skip out on it, imo.

Market shares aren't everything, gpus have a higher profit margin than cpus due to the higher overall price. That said, maybe they're selling a lot of athlons

They had 15W chips just like Intel did. It would have been fine.

According to performance numbers from the laptop variants, the iGPU was about 4x as powerful.

What people continuously forget is that Intel is licencing amd's 64-bit technology, AMD gets money for each and every Intel CPU sold... Intel gets money for each and every 32-bit CPU AMD sells... which is significantly lower :P

No I was saying this in the sense that Zen will not be so incredible to allow AMD to become profitable on its own. AMD needs a few years of competitive products to get back to profitability in its CPU products. I don't think that everyone should have i3s. I just don't believe that one CPU line will make everyone want to upgrade. Yes of course some people will upgrade, but still a CPU upgrade is not as common as a GPU upgrade. Btw you seem angry. It's such a horrible business strategy to base the entire future of your company on one product. Honestly, I don't get how they can be doing so poorly seeing as they have a chip in every current gen console and will likely also be in every next gen console...they must really undercut whatever competitors they have for that.

The other problem is that nvidia rules the high end enthusiast gpu market (honestly , who bought a fury x ?), and that's where a company makes money.
