Rocksteady: multi-GPU support not practical

We’ve been working with our development and graphics driver partners over the last few months to investigate utilizing multi-GPU support within Batman: Arkham Knight. The result was that even the best case estimates for performance improvements turned out to be relatively small given the high risk of creating new issues for all players. As a result we’ve had to make the difficult decision to stop work on further multi-GPU support. We are disappointed that this was not practical and apologize to those who have been waiting for this feature.

the pulled them game from stores, re-pububled it still broken and people wait for them to add multi GPU support to it!? come on!  -_-

 

I had, still have but it's bit .. broken, a HD4870X2 - not funny when only one GPU works for a very expensive video card

 

this still stands: before going SLI / CrossFire, aim for the most powerful single GPU video card you can afford

Yeah I mean having better performance is not practical

That game is so broken i don't even know why people care at this point, Multi-GPU support is always gonna be kinda s*** to begin with.

Why couldn't these guys make some stupid game like spiderman, and leave batman to a company that cared about the pc.....I'm a sad batman fan right now.

Multi GPU configurations always have been and probably always will be niche. Very few developers are going to waste time to appease a tiny percentage of their sales base.

 

There's DLC to be made, son.

Just as it is with making parallel software on the CPU, so it is with making multi-GPU games. You design for it from the start. Honestly if engine and game devs took one month to actually work out the bulk of the design for the program's infrastructure up front, this wouldn't be an issue. Graphics is embarrassingly parallel. There's little excuse for it in this day and age. In my graphics class we have SLI working on OpenGL. If you build the interface for it FIRST, it's not that hard to build a game that uses it.

Now, are our games simple? Yes. We don't have complex models capable of human-like motion? No. Do we have cloth and hair physics? No. We do have advanced lighting, we have sound; we have big, dense environments. You just have to be smart about it.

They have just abandonned the game and its probably the right thing to do since its sales will never recover from 2 failed launches. Simply no point throwing the time at it to make it a working product, give everyone who wants a refund a refund and then move on and presumably don't release a game in that broken of a state again.

We've lost a metric ton of cash on this game and we plan to put in every savings measure we can. We've realized that fixing the game is too expensive.

We're just playing nice so you - the customer - will forget this fiasco and buy the next Batman game we make; Batman: Arkham Bullcrap (we fired the guy in charge of titles to save some money).

They did. Not long after the relaunch one of the community managers stated that they can't fix some parts of the game. However, they never said which parts those are.

 

You just have to be smart about it.

 

Well, there's the problem. Nothing about the PC version of AK was smart.

Just as it is with making parallel software on the CPU, so it is with making multi-GPU games. You design for it from the start. Honestly if engine and game devs took one month to actually work out the bulk of the design for the program's infrastructure up front, this wouldn't be an issue. Graphics is embarrassingly parallel. There's little excuse for it in this day and age. In my graphics class we have SLI working on OpenGL. If you build the interface for it FIRST, it's not that hard to build a game that uses it.

Now, are our games simple? Yes. We don't have complex models capable of human-like motion? No. Do we have cloth and hair physics? No. We do have advanced lighting, we have sound; we have big, dense environments. You just have to be smart about it.

I do a lot of graphics programming with Direct3D and I have to agree.

I'm so glad I didn't buy the game. The major discounts before release made me very skeptical. Even so, $60 for a broken game at launch? No multi-GPU support either. Ugh.

got it for £12 with all DLC, can almost run it at 60fps on one 7970 ghz,

 

Fucking pissed me off they have given up on Crossfire as i get 25fps extra on the average even with the flickering broken mess it currently is in.

 

Picking up a R9 fury tomorrow, and ditching crossfire.......................................For now ;)

Many tech people recommend a single powerful graphics card over 2 weaker ones and Linus recommends selling your old hardware when the time is right and upgrading to more powerful hardware rather than sli or crossfire.

The first two were pretty darn good, some port problems aside (nothing close to what happened with AK). They were also made by rocksteady. Soooo... what's your point? There have been good and bad batman games more or less in the same ratio as there have been spiderman games, and the arkham series is probably what you're describing as "batman", so effectively you're shunning the company that created the franchise in the first place.

Many tech people recommend a single powerful graphics card over 2 weaker ones and Linus recommends selling your old hardware when the time is right and upgrading to more powerful hardware rather than sli or crossfire.

 

And yet a triple A game should not need to compromise like that - especially after they worked directly with nvidia. I'm fairly sure multi gpu support isn't particularly hard to implement for a large developer, even meh support is better than none. There are people who want to play at maxed 4k 60fps or 144fps 1440p, neither of which is possible on a single gpu at the moment. It is however possible with a couple of bang for the buck cards like r9 390s, which enable all this for the price of a single 980ti which wouldn't. There are good reasons why you'd want a multi gpu setup over the most powerful single gpu available, especially since the price of those gpus is often inflated because they know they can do that.

 

There really isn't a justification for the state of this game, it all adds up even if a lot of users won't be affected by this particular problem.

Maybe there's 2 words for this: planned obsolescence. Nvidia worked with the developer on a hot title to sell more hardware, particularly the 980ti.

Edit: the developer tales the heat on lack of multi gpu support, nvidia gets more sales on their hardware as well as more sales on the game (for the developer) because it's a the way it's meant to be played title.

They should be honest and say: "ok guys, we screwed it up, no multi-GPU support", instead of something like: "we looked into it and we made the difficult decision of stop working on it".
