Windows 10 upgrades to happen automatically

You relaise that the upgrade won't happen unless the user agress to the EULA?

No argument from me.

I have made my opinion made to MS about the ease of access and all that. You should see the amount of complaints about this issue on the ms suggestion thread from previewers.

The thing is (like here) if you going to complain (this to those that do) do right. Give ms a detailed 'informed' opinion of the what and why, they tend to ignore ranting opinions that offer no forethought into why it 'sucks', I know I would.

And how many people just rant? I have seen a lot of people against this, and hardly any of them just ranted on like an idiot. Regardless though, you really think Microsoft would care if it was kindly written?

Rather than "it is legal", it is untested. What MS does goes a bit further than what Google does.

 

Also, the EULA is not the full story. Also read the Privacy Statement: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/privacystatement/

 

Part of it says:

 

Content. We collect content of your files and communications when necessary to provide you with the services you use. For example, if you receive an email using Outlook.com, we need to collect the content of that email in order to deliver it to your inbox, display it to you, enable you to reply to it, and store it for you until you choose to delete it. Examples of this data include: the content of your documents, photos, music or video you upload to a Microsoft service such as OneDrive, as well as the content of your communications sent or received using Microsoft services such Outlook.com or Skype, including the:

  • subject line and body of an email,
  • text or other content of an instant message,
  • audio and video recording of a video message, and
  • audio recording and transcript of a voice message you receive or a text message you dictate.

 

 

And then also expand and read the "How we use personal data" section. MS essentially claims a carte blanche to do whatever with a person's data. There also is no assurance that data won't be used for anything beyond what MS have listed in their Privacy Statement, and the PS is simply a general concept. There is nothing in the EULA or PS that puts limitations on what MS might do with the data they collect. What MS present is the basic guarantee of how data will be used, and not the upper limit of what data might get used for.

 

So, is Windows 10 and MS data collection and usage straight-forward? Only if the direction you're looking to head in it ubiquitous and indiscriminate use of all your data by MS.

Of course MS will store your e-mail if it's on Outlook.com, your voice if you use Skype, and your documents if they are on OneDrive. You can use all of those services on Linux. It has nothing to do with 10.

It definitely applies to Windows 10. Windows services covered by the PS include:  Bing, Cortana, MSN, Office, OneDrive, Outlook.com, Skype, Windows, Xbox and other Microsoft services that display this statement

 

Many of those run by default in Windows 10, and Windows itself is listed right there as an included service.

They wouldn't know. Nobody would. I guarantee you nobody at microsoft just scrolls through the hordes of data they get. Which are mainly just application statistics that better enhance your experience. Besides, even if they DID look through it, I doubt they would comprehend it because, more than likely, it's compiled into matrices in order to view bulk data. Not individuals when it comes to things other than cortona (which, although data is collected, it is stored privately).

Just like the NSA only cares about our security and never shared pictures around the office smh!

Rather than "it is legal", it is untested. What MS does goes a bit further than what Google does.

 

Also, the EULA is not the full story. Also read the Privacy Statement: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/privacystatement/

 

Part of it says:

 

Content. We collect content of your files and communications when necessary to provide you with the services you use. For example, if you receive an email using Outlook.com, we need to collect the content of that email in order to deliver it to your inbox, display it to you, enable you to reply to it, and store it for you until you choose to delete it. Examples of this data include: the content of your documents, photos, music or video you upload to a Microsoft service such as OneDrive, as well as the content of your communications sent or received using Microsoft services such Outlook.com or Skype, including the:

  • subject line and body of an email,
  • text or other content of an instant message,
  • audio and video recording of a video message, and
  • audio recording and transcript of a voice message you receive or a text message you dictate.

 

 

And then also expand and read the "How we use personal data" section. MS essentially claims a carte blanche to do whatever with a person's data. There also is no assurance that data won't be used for anything beyond what MS have listed in their Privacy Statement, and the PS is simply a general concept. There is nothing in the EULA or PS that puts limitations on what MS might do with the data they collect. What MS present is the basic guarantee of how data will be used, and not the upper limit of what data might get used for.

 

So, is Windows 10 and MS data collection and usage straight-forward? Only if the direction you're looking to head in it ubiquitous and indiscriminate use of all your data by MS.

 

So basically what you are getting at is; that MS is doing the same as what Google tried to pull with claiming that 'because you use our services we own what you made on our stuff' (paraphrasing) 'so we hold the right to make use of it any way we see fit'.

Eh I don't buy that. MS has not done anything like that before and I don't see them trying a get around from what Google pulled.

 

 

I have to agree that MS needs to amend their EULA to address the personal data usage limitations.

 

I don't want to sound blind hear but I just cannot see MS going down the road of 'stealing' actual data off pc's, I understand the whole needing access to data being sent over the web utilizing their services as it the same as sending a piece of snail mail, you give the Post office the letter as its the only to get it to where it is going but it is not Post Office Property, they are just a service to deliver the mail, it doesn't give them the right or power to read it.

I honestly think we are going a bit to deep here and reading to far into what is written. Obvious the server is going to 'know' the content of the document to transmit it.

Last I checked, Windows 10 is included in Windows, and the PS states that Windows is an inclusion of what the PS applies to. So does Windows 10 include this statement? The statement includes Windows 10. And Microsoft have applied telemetry to Windows 7 and 8, so the PS applies to all modern supported Windows, but people can prevent those updates from installing in Windows 7 / 8. But those things are not preventable updates in Windows 10.

You're giving blind trust to a corporation that has acted unscrupulously many times in its history. Also, you're giving blind trust after the fact that the corporation has unilaterally claimed this is what they'll do. Personal privacy is a right, and control over one's space is a right. A person's activity on their own device is a part of their personal space, and there shouldn't be any corporation's fingers reaching into it.

 

Google uses email content to deliver targeted ads, but MS' policy on data usage is not limited to that, and doesn't have any outer borders. That's not an acceptable situation.

There was recently a host of telemetry updates moved onto Windows 7 and 8. I won't supply sources because everyone is aware of these. I manually uninstalled them from my Windows 7 installation after MS unilaterally changed my update settings to accept automatic updates, to sneak the telemetry updates on to my PC.

And how many people just rant? I have seen a lot of people against this, and hardly any of them just ranted on like an idiot. Regardless though, you really think Microsoft would care if it was kindly written?

 

It doesn't matter what I think how MS uses the complaints it receives or how they are written. It is just that they have the resource available to submit the complaint/ suggestion there for it to be received. How they are addressing it? I don't really know, I don't work at or with MS. 

I do know they have a team that does address the issues. I do know that a lot of the issues are prioritized and get addressed accordingly. Win10 is receiving updates to improve itself and there is a lot to do. MS said it would take time to get the OS up to snuff after launch once the general public starts giving input. We have one such update so far.

Windows 7 previously had no data collection. Now it does, unless a person prevents those updates from installing by disabling automatic updates.

Disabled windows update the day I installed my OS; I've only manually used it once, and I doubt I'll be dumb enough to upgrade to 10 by accident. Still, this is waaay to sneaky for the average user to pick up on.

Well now I know what I am going to be seeing at work 90% of the time... I have 7 right now and if one day I come home and see 10 is on my system shit is going to hit the fan.

 

ALSO how about my laptop that has 7 but the GPU is not supported under Windows 10? (I have 2 laptops with this problem) seriously both Microsoft and Apple have been making some stupid moves lately...

All versions of Windows from XP onward had data collection. Called Windows Error Reporting. The Customer Experience Improvement Program has been around since Vista as well.

 

 

 

 

But in reality is that it does have extra methods of data collection, even if you don't care to see them...otherwise they wouldn't have updated the previous Windows to work the same as Win10.

Can you name an example (other than Cortana)?

You're giving blind trust to a corporation that has acted unscrupulously many times in its history. Also, you're giving blind trust after the fact that the corporation has unilaterally claimed this is what they'll do. Personal privacy is a right, and control over one's space is a right. A person's activity on their own device is a part of their personal space, and there shouldn't be any corporation's fingers reaching into it.

 

Google uses email content to deliver targeted ads, but MS' policy on data usage is not limited to that, and doesn't have any outer borders. That's not an acceptable situation.

I am not giving blind trust to anyone. I am stating what I know. The thing is like I pointed out is the Google did go out and did the exact thing you are suggesting MS is doing.

Your defending Google who did do it and was sued, the company that sued was right here in Des Moines, IA. (I'll have to find the link)

 

I did agree with you that MS need to amend their policy on this to be more specific and include limitations. I think your skimming through my replies and not really reading them.

So far I have not seen any evidence that MS has done this (neither have I seen any showing they did not).

I am sorry but your wrong, Google may do this now but as I stated in one of my previous replies Google was sued for not revealing they were doing this and other use with the information. Google and Apple was taken to court and ordered to reveal its practices on how they used the information.

MS has been upfront with the fact they were going to do the same thing.

 

The fact they are not placing specific limitations in the policy does worry me. I agree this needs to be addressed.

The best part about what Google did is they took CopyRighted Material and Used it for their own gain.

Did you try Windows 7/8 drivers? Did you try running the setup under compatibility mode? Did you try getting the extracted drivers (.zip -> extract), and install them via device manager?

I manage to install GeForce Go 7200 just fine under Win10.

Ok another post cause ya this is really messed up lol

 

So like I said I don't know how this is going to work if a system has unsupported hardware, another thing it to what about a school for example that is running 7 on all of there systems? Is it going to start downloading the update all at the same time causing the network to go crazy or even go down? Come on Microsoft this is F***** up, so much so I have a feeling this can't be true it is that bad.... then again I thought the iPad pro was a joke till it came out....

True, they did, but not to this extent. I think it is pretty foolish to argue Win7 had data collection or not when it was obvious it did. However, I do believe some Windows (the oldest ones) did not have data collection at all. I read this a few days ago on this forum...I'll have to google it.

 

Oh and User tracking tools are the worst addition and best example to give. I don't own a vocabulary that possess the correct terms for them all, but reddit and the last time I checked 'ghacks' possess further details. Telemetry was altered as well. It is really how some things were changed or "improved" in Win10 and then shipped to Win7.

I manage to install GeForce Go 7200 just fine under Win10.

Yea with no luck, I have a 3 laptops actually that have this problem  -_- The newest video drivers for them are Windows 7 and even in compatibility mode will not work or will experience BSOD if I manage to get it going
