Thank you for helping me "shock and awe" a class of college students. I used the ending of your son building a gaming pc (wish I could've shown the whole thing, but had a video time limit). It helped me really push my point, and get an A in my speech class.

There's only 2 occasions when copyright is legally waivered, fair use and educational.

I'd call this educational, plus I don't think Linus actually copyrights his videos anyway.

except he doesnt spend much time on the forum, so when he does read them its because a ton of people tag him for one topic

but he doesnt go through all of them, which is why he asks people to contact him on twitter, not on the forum or email

I'd call this educational, plus I don't think Linus actually copyrights his videos anyway.

Copyright is automatically granted upon the creation of a creative work, no registration or paperwork necessary as per the conditions of the Berne Convention which nearly every nation on the planet is a signatory of.  Yes, the videos are copyrighted.  But yeah, showing a clip for a class presentation most certainly does not violate copyright.  There is also no requirement to give notification of copyright in the creative work for it to be protected by copyright.

Yes my work is all copyrighted, but it is only if the copyright owner chooses to enforce the aforementioned copyright that it becomes an issue for whoever is using the work.

 

In the case of school projects or classroom use (and fan creations like mashups and whatnot) I never pursue any kind of action and when people ask me (ahead of time is preferred) always give the okay.

 

Anyway, for the reference of anyone reading this thread I don't see @linustech tags because I have notifications disabled (too many) but I do read at least the subject lines of probably 80% of what's posted on this forum, so if a thread is titled "Dear Linus" I'll usually at least pop my head in :)

Completely unrelated to this thread, but i wish someone told me when i was in school. It doesn't matter what you're interested in whether it's deemed "cool" or not. Do what you enjoy and don't give a damn what anyone else thinks. You want to talk about runescape for your english presentation you do it ! My point essentially is don't change yourself for someone else they are never worth the effort.
