Deciding between i5-6600k or i7-6700k

My friend is in the area for an upgrade, pretty sure he is on Ivy Bridge i5 atm.

 

He pretty much only uses PC for gaming.

 

I suggested the i5 but he wasnt too sure still.

 

EDIT: He has a 980Ti so doesnt need an GPU upgrade atm :P

You don't need the i7 for just gaming, there will be almost no difference between the two. If he does video editing etc. then I would probably get the i7, but it's not required for gaming.

i7 is a waste of money if he is only going to be gaming.

 

Going to Skylake from Ivy Bridge is a waste of money.

If he's only gaming, the i5 will be just fine. Hell, maybe even stick to his current i5 and get a better GPU before you jump to skylake, depending on his setup.

Games are becoming more and more CPU demanding, a quick trip to YouTube will net you tons of videos on games where the i7 will gain over 10fps over the i5. Imagine what games will be like next year. So what you have to ask is do you want to save money now just to spend it on a i7 in a year?

Then OP should go for a 3770K or 2600K instead.

Just wait it out...
My friend on a similar matter, my friend just returned his 980Ti after upgrading from a 680 lightning... There is definitely a performance increase, but what is the point of playing at 100-150FPS 980Ti, if your old GPU still manages over 60 FPS just lowering the details slightly (going from ultra to high basically, 1080p).

 

Same thing goes for that GPU upgrade, its unnecessary, it already performs good enough for a gaming need. He might better save up for the next gen CPUs or get a beefier GPU now.

No need for a new CPU, he can invest it into an SSD or GPU, a new case, something else.

Going to Skylake from Ivy Bridge is a waste of money.

Guess that kinda depends on what the purpose of upgrading is. If he is upgrading under the guise that a newer CPU will give him magical, noticeable performance, probably not worth it. However, Skylake brings a new platform, with some pretty enticing features. Being able to SLI while using a PCIE M.2 based SSD is probably one of the bigger perks of Z170. Though, one could argue going X99 would be just as great an option for those specific reasons.

 

So yeah, getting Skylake just for the sake of having it is pointless. Getting it for the platform improvements on the other hand, that might be a good reason to upgrade.

Did a horrible job with the crop, run two monitors so if I use the capture you can't read what it says because it's too small. As you can see I'm consistent on 695, the lesser score is stock clock speed.

6600K for gaming, 6700K for more

Might as well go 6700k if he wants it to be any kind of real upgrade, though I'd go 5820k myself if I was to upgrade to any other CPU from an Ivy i5.

From the data I have on gamegpu.ru comparing CPUs like the 2500k and 2600k or more modern CPUs hyperthreading is worth on average about 4% extra in games. The best benefit a game has shown in their tests is 22% however. Almost all games show at least a 3% gain in performance and 25% of them show more than 7%. So take that as you will but hyperthreading does show performance benefits in games, the only question is whether the amount of it is is worth the additional cost.
