Does 32 bit or 64 bit matter?

if you have a 64-bit OS, get the 64-bit version.

 

even if only for making it a good habit...

 

EDIT: theres exceptions, like 64-bit browsers, which could bring issues from time to time... (fix yo schiit browser devs...)

If you have a 64 bit version of the OS, may as well just install the 64 bit version unless it causes problems. You may get additional performance from doing so.

YES! If you have 32bit windows then 64 bit programs won't work. 64 bit is better and no one should have 32 bit windows anymore

YES! If you have 32bit windows then 64 bit programs won't work. 64 bit is better and no one should have 32 bit windows anymore

unless the CPU doesnt support 64bit instructions or more than 4 GB of ram...

If there are two versions of a program, 64 and 32 bit, does it matter which one I install? 

It doesn't really matter unless if its a "memory hungry" program(like something that renders, because these types of applications actually take advantage of 64bit). I choose 64bit when I can since it makes me feel better :P

Not only that, but back a few years, Dell used to make some of their motherboard limited to a 32-bit OS while the system itself has a 64-bit ready CPU.

64-bit ones have access to 16.8 Million I think?

off the top of my head... most 32bit applications dont go above 1GB usage before tossing out of memory errors.

After the Core iX series, I haven't seen much of the same "cut-back" that Dell did previously.

Surprisingly - some work fine. Like I said - Chivalry is my prime example - 32-bit client is fine. Uses 1.6GB of RAM. 64-bit version decides that 8GB of RAM ain't enough for it.

the system was a core2quad, not from dell tho.. it was from medion.

 

and it worked... mostly...

the system basicly turned into a toaster, thermal throttling into a kernel panic...

Yeah, but that is generally because the OS-set limit for memory usage on 32-bit OSs is generally 1 GB. The 32 bit applications are just not build to be able to handle more than 1 giggleabyte because of that reason.

Beside 4GB memory limitation in 32-bit version (but that is not a problem, I can force Win7 32-bit to see and use at least 64GB ram) for regular user there is no real difference between 32 and 64-bit OS...

Just do a simple test- look how many program you have (on your 64-bit OS) in folder "Program files (x86)"... I can bet that 75+% of standard programs for video, audio and other simple things (including browsers) + more than 1 game are there...

Windows when it was 32 bit by default had 2GB maximum for a program and 4GB total RAM. It used the top bit to distinguish between operating system space and program space so actually the OS took up 2GB of memory space to work. They did however add a switch that allowed the operating system to take 1GB and allow a program to use up to 3GB if the program itself supported it (rarely they do, server thing mostly). Of course there is also the extended memory versions of Windows server than can use more than 4GB despite being 32 bit, the user space programs are still limited to 2-3GB for a process but the entire OS could go up to 32GB.

 

64 bit does away with all these problems for a very long time. That is really all there is to it. So for the most part if a program gives you a choice you want the 64 bit version, but they often don't and it actually rarely matters right now as most programs don't often exceed the 2GB process limit anyway. They will in increasing numbers as we get further past the 32 bit era but right now most software is designed to run within those limits.
