why does linus use misleading benchmarks?

well its not like theres much of a difference between the i7 and i5(which most people would end up having)

Someone may decide to pair a Core i3 with the 950.

this pisses me off so much. in his GTX 950 sli video he used an i7 6700K top of the line CPU, as well as a super high end motherboard, but then benchmarks with a GTX 950? this is just one example, but linus as well as several other tech youtubers all do this. am i missing something, or would choosing a more appropriate CPU compared to the GPU they are testing, be a much more accurate way to benchmark? in some videos, they dont even show the CPU used at all!! that could be the difference of 10-20 frames that buyers might not realize!! this is especially important for lower end graphics cards where most people are running 6300's and 4460's. am i completely wrong here or??

I understand where you're coming from, but it's to eliminate any kind of possible bottlenecks. Pretty sure the games run off an SSD as well.

The pooint is to be accurate.. If they use differents cpu's you cant compare the gpu. The cpu would affect the gpu's performance.

You're right in most circumstances, but they're reviewing the card, not a build. It's the buyer's responsibility to research the system they're building. They use the highest-end CPUs to eliminate bottlenecks, because they're reviewing the card itself, not how it will perform in a similar price bracket of CPU. It's something I've wondered myself, and I agreed with you until I took the time to think it out. You're not wrong :P

It's also because he has a 6700K on hand to use.  A lot of making videos is using what you have on hand.

For how long have you been watching Linus's videos, or any other tech youtubers for that matter?

People who do benchmarks use high end CPU to eliminate bottlenecks and find the real performance the GPU can give you, is not misleading in any way.

If you get lower performance with X GPU, then your CPU is your bottleneck.

If they are using a high end CPU, and they are using that to be consistent across the board with the cards they are reviewing then I don't see what the issue is.

 

They are just keeping the test the same for greater accuracy.

1. Using a high end CPU is to ensure that the CPU isn't a factor in the test.

2. Using a "high end" motherboard, will have no effect on the test, as motherboards do not effect performance, as long as you are using the same CPU in each motherboard. (take a GPU and CPU and put them in 3 different motherboards on the same socket and chipset, and the performance will be the same)

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

this pisses me off so much. in his GTX 950 sli video he used an i7 6700K top of the line CPU, as well as a super high end motherboard, but then benchmarks with a GTX 950? this is just one example, but linus as well as several other tech youtubers all do this. am i missing something, or would choosing a more appropriate CPU compared to the GPU they are testing, be a much more accurate way to benchmark? in some videos, they dont even show the CPU used at all!! that could be the difference of 10-20 frames that buyers might not realize!! this is especially important for lower end graphics cards where most people are running 6300's and 4460's. am i completely wrong here or??

 

It's not a whole-system benchmark, it's a GPU benchmark. This is the way benchmarking is done everywhere, not just LTT. It's not misleading at all, they're showing the actual performance a GTX 950 is capable of without something else bottlenecking performance.

 

The idea is to isolate a single variable. If you use a very high-end CPU, you reduce the likelihood that your benchmarks will be affected by CPU performance. It's easier to get an idea where a video card compares if the CPU is not artificially limiting the results. Conversely, if you wanted to benchmark CPU performance, you'd use the most powerful video card(s) you can get your hands on so you don't get multiple bars on the graph all the same length.

They do this so that the only variable in their testing is the GPU itself and to make sure there are no bottlenecks anywhere in the system. This makes it useful to consumers becasue it shows what the GPU is capable of, and it is useful to them because instead of re-running benchmarks for new CPUs everytime they get a new card, they just add the new numbers to the ones from the old charts.

And that's where Linus is biased. A controlled environment would be using a benchmark which doesn't give an advantage to some cards over others. That's the danger of picking a card, your performance changes from game to game. In reality there is no way to benchmark a GPU accurately. You just have to go off of the information available and punt.

You obviously are missing the mark. They use the same test bench for each test, changing only the GPU. This is a control group.

They run a variety of tests so your argument about biased tests is bad too. They run genetic benchmarks AND a variety of real world games. These are the games people are playing so the test shows the same performance you'll get when you play it.

Older games are cpu intensive so those might have different numbers. Modern games are GPU dependant so swapping processors will change your results very little.

My cousin games on a 9year old cpu and gets the same frame rates I do.

You misunderstand, I'm saying that it's impossible to test every model of a particular GPU in every game and benchmark to get an idea of the average performance. So the model you choose to test and the tests you run dictates the outcome of the test. I wasn't commenting on the test bench.

That is irrelevant to this test as this test is about comparing two 950's to one 970, not just one 950. Generally speaking, those considering a GPU in the 970's price range will have a higher budget and be looking to pairing it with an i5 or FX 8-core, not an i3. ;)
