Why are APUs shunned from general desktops?

All I normally see for general desktops (web surfers, YouTube/Facebook machines, hell, even HTPCs) are Intel's processors, and overpowered ones at that.

I almost never see anyone recommend an APU.

Am I just being delusional or eh?

TBH they kind of suck. For one you are cramming more components into the same space, they heat up more cause there is more parts working. And overall if you want a good powerhouse you are looking at add-in GPU cards and powerful CPU's. APU's are a little lacking in this department, plus you can't upgrade the graphics aspect of an APU without upgrading the entire thing, and that sucks!

intel is pushing some seroius beef in their igpus and has better cpus that make up for the slightly slower gpu than some apus

my 5th gen mobile i3 can push games well at 720p for just being a mobile cpu

Because AMD holds the actual APUs which aren't that great for enthusiast level.

Great for the parents and kids though.

Until Intel released some great integrated GPUs(They starting to) I am pretty sure it will be looked down upon.

Because they have no upgrade path and have low IPC.

For regular desktop, users they are are just now upgrading from Celerons. An APU will easily, last them 4 or more years. Th biggest thing that holds back desktop users is Ram. I notice all these parents who want to upgrade there PC is because they have like 1GB of ram.

Because adding a GPU, getting a better APU, adding more RAM or putting in a sdd is not an upgrade!

I obviously meant a substantial upgrade to the CPU performance, not that you couldn't upgrade anything else. There are some higher APUs, but if you start with an A6 or A8, then you will only get a tiny boost from going to an A10. On the intel side, you are going from an i3 or pentium to an i7, which is an enormous upgrade.

Technically as most i3s, i5s, and i7s, (as well as some others) all have integrated graphics, they'd be considered APUs, so I wouldn't really say that APUs are shunned from general desktops in general, more of just AMD's APUs, or more of all of AMD's processors lol

Because with an A10-7850k with an MSI A68hm MB going for 109 bucks at microcenter APU users have allot of cash left over to actually buy games and play them, buy a car and date chicks, and basically have a life outside of LTT:) Annandtech has two reviews, broadwell and skyjunk, that include the a10 7850k benchmarks for comparison. Alone they game great, drop a gtx 770 and the go toe to toe with intels best costing upwards of a grand.

I guess you mean USING the APU, since all intel I series processors have integrated graphics and are therefore, APUs. But no one uses the gpu side since pretty much anything would be better for gaming.

For general desktops that you buy in the store? APU's are the most popular thing there is, for people who don't know what they are buying.

Well that is part of my point. You shouldn't be getting something that slow in the first place, because then you'll just need to upgrade and spend way more money overall. I wouldn't really recommend anything lower than an a8, and only an a6 if the budget was extremely tight (I wouldn't recommend either of those in general, but I hope you know what I'm saying).

No one should get a pentium or a celeron either.

The people who are NOT going to upgrade their CPU should get an A10 or an A8

The people who will should get an i3.

Sadly basically everyone gets an i3 instead, despite an APU would suit them better.

my dad's company switched all their computers from i3 to amd apus and it is currently amd's biggest money maker

lol oh man, i'd hate to be the guy that has to upgrade from that when they quickly become obsolete.

Pftt, only plebeians would get something so simple. Why only an h80i, Why not a custom loop instead? Why an asrock board, those are just for poor people. Only 64gb ram? 128gb is much nicer. Only four SSDs, and also no PCIe ones? peasant. Why have two titan Xs when you can have three or four? A fractal design case? Only caselabs in good enough for anybody serious. Only 80+ gold on that PSU? not even platinum let alone titanium!
