Let's Put This to Rest: Build Über 4K PC NOW OR WAIT for Pascal / Arcitc Island DIRECT X12 vs MANTLE?

you being serious right? #NotTrolling ???

Im serious

Skylake does offer some IPC improvement, not a lot but its still something to consider. Also the extra cores in the extreme version would not be half bad. Im thinking a game like Star Citizen will be well optimized to make use off all the cores.

Also pascal will still be in improvement over maxwell especially with HBM 2 and better DX12 support. Remember this is 4k and your build is an Extreme build, you want every bit of performance you can get.

I know people will say dont wait... but if you set your waiting limit to Skylake -E and Pascal then its ok.

Just get 980ti SLI now, no point waiting.

By the time pascal is out for 4k gaming somewhere 2016 Q4 -  2017 Q1, Something else would replace it within a year and I've notice that in every 6-8 months there is always TI upgrade model.

You won't be missing out much if you lack patience and won't gaining much if you can wait.

GTX 580 >  7-8 months later  > GTX 580 Ti

GTX 680 >  7-8 months later  > GTX 680 Ti

GTX 780 >  7-8 months later  > GTX 780 Ti

GTX 980 >  7-8 months later  > GTX 980 Ti

Rinse and Repeat, almost like Intel's tick tock.

@WereCat @ @djdwosk97

You guys seem to know what's what: Why two 980TI's? I mean it's $300 MORE than a TITAN X and half the VRAM. I'll admit I don't fully comprehend the "Power" vs "VRAM" argument, but I've seen GTAV (Not even a true 4K game) use 5.7GB of VRAM at 4K, why bet on future games being under 5.9GB of VRAM? Battlefront looks crazy and Fallout 4 Mods will enhance the graphics, From where I'm sitting a $975 TITAN X seems to be the deal. Unless of course the TITAN Z for $1,500 and it's what? 5,700 cuda cores is the bees knees.

DAMN CHOICES!!!!!!!

A 980Ti will usually be faster than a Titan X since it can be overclocked further (assuming you didn't get a dud of a chip) due to running cooler and coming with better after market coolers (or after market coolers to begin with).

So at stock speeds, a single 980Ti is only a bit slower than Titan X.

VRAM isn't all that important of a spec -- if you have enough of it then anymore is irrelevant, and 6gb is still plenty. The Titan Z is just two Titans (non X's) on a single card that thermal throttles to hell and back. Also, CUDA cores aren't everything -- a 780 has like 400 more cuda cores than a 980 (IIRC), but a 980 is far faster.

It may be half of the vRAM, however it is difficult with current games to actually get them using more than 6GB even if your really pushing the settings, and the way Vulcan and DirectX 12 are going. That being said a single TitanX is more than enough for 4K gaming-its actually the first proper single GPU 4K graphics card and you won't see any of the SLI issues. Also a TitanZ isn't as good from my understanding-CUDA core count doesn't mean everything.

Edit: Also, a single GTX 980ti as mentioned in the post above is a good option as well even with some games poorly utilising the vRAM.

980ti performs almost exactly as Titan X. In some games better and in some slightly worse.

So you pay 300$ more for 2x 980ti but you get almost double the performance of the TitanX depending on how well will the game use the SLI.

Also there is no game that can use 6GB of VRAM let alone 12GB. There is difference between how much VRAM game using and how much it allocates if there is more VRAM than needed available.

TBH, if you wait for a new GPU/graphics card to come out now you will always be waiting for. Just build an uber 4K PC now and upgrade 5+ years from now if you need to.

Yeah that's true for anyone spending that much for a gaming rig or more. Even Steve Sedlmeyer has a watercooled rig with 3 Titan Black Hydro Coppers, 4960X, 64GB of Dominator RAM and he said he expects 5 years out of the system. He does content creation on the machine and games on it occasionally. For my systems that tops out at $6,800 at the top end with ~$1,200 of it on the watercooling, I also expect to pull 5-7 years even when overclocked with 24/7 stable operation.

See that system with a Titan X isn't too bad at all. However the monitor and GPU pairing is overkill, 1440p can get away with a 980 Ti. The Titan X is more poised for 4K resolution and they also double up as a cheaper alternative for a workstation GPU that can be acquired easily by consumers looking for a lot of power, but can't quite reach out for a Quadro GPU which is proper for a workstation-workstation usage scenario.

I'd say either go with a 5820k (if you have money to burn and/or if you want faster rendering times) or go with a 4790k. Skylake just isn't worth the cost right now. I'd also take a 980Ti over a Titan X any day. (I'd also lose the sound card)

And for the more subjective stuff:

A non-ROG board (something cheaper), a different case, an EVGA G2 850w psu (because it's also quite good, but usually a decent bit cheaper), and no ODD.

Titan X's don't really have that half gamer, half workstation card situation anymore due to the Titan X not having double floating point precision like the original Titan.

I'd say either go with a 5820k (if you have money to burn and/or if you want faster rendering times) or go with a 4790k. Skylake just isn't worth the cost right now. I'd also take a 980Ti over a Titan X a different case, an EVGA G2 850w

Titan X's don't really have that half gamer, half workstation card situation anymore due to the Titan X not having double floating point precision like the original Titan.

further explain why not 6700k (2015 tech)

I'm fond of the colossal stuff Comos II all the way

Thanks for PSU recommendation

Why would I lose the sound card I said I wanted HQ audio editing etc

Skylake is only marginally faster than Haswell but quite a bit more expensive. And in terms of rendering Haswell-E's Hexa-core is FAR better than a Skylake quad core, and in terms of gaming performance a 6700k will only be a bit (an irrelevant amount) faster.
