The Alienware 18 is Back!

asim1999

FYI some poeple don't care about price

While I personally wouldn't buy their desktops, I would happily drop $3000 on one of their laptops

How often/when do you actually use a gaming laptop? I have never really understood the point tbh, a decent desktop + cheap laptop/MacBook Air works fine.

Pretty much daily or at least every week

Not everyone will see the point, its not for everyone, thats why its not a general purpose machine, a macbook air/cheap laptop is not powerful enough, and I can afford to get something better.. so why should I settle?

I have a good desktop, and I wanted that kind of power in a portable package too

Ok...I'd never heard of mobile servers until your post.

Looking at their workstation laptops, they could also be described as enthusiast laptops with the features offered-their gaming laptops can't really compare: http://www.eurocom.com/ec/productsg%283%29ec

Though apparently you can get bios that allow overclocking:

dude I have a 380t and it's HUGE

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

1. Must be nice not to care about price....

1) I care about the price,  money is a limited resource and I have to spend it wisely - but I will invest more in a product if it suits me

2) its not about being overpriced, its a niche product, if I have to pay more for its specific traits, then I have to pay more, my laptop has HDMI IN (useful for field monitoring and travel), dual GPUs, a nice 18" display etc, great keyboard, macro buttons, numpad, great build quality, warranty and service

In the grand scheme of things, compared to other computers similar in specification, it is not that much more money

I would never buy beats, thats why I bought my nice Beyerdynamics gaming headset, which actually costs more than that, but I wanted something of its quality therefore i paid the money

I always like to say, find me another one like it... and honestly there are only like 3 18" laptops on the market, the M18x, the MSI GT80, and the Clevo 18" model...........

Non gaming laptops with i7's start at 800-900$

Just an fyi. The i7s in most laptops which are not gaming are dual core HT parts with slightly higher clock and more cache. Only MQ, HQ SKUs are quad core HT i7s.

Also. On another note I think for a gaming laptop,4k displays are a joke.give me a good 1080p screen please

Thats what gaming desktops are for.

And if it gets outdated i'd just buy a new one.

Not that that would happen that soon as i wouldnt ever game on a laptop as the desktop experience is superiour anyways.

Plenty of bashing against Alienware in here, as usual!

Personally, I have a 17 R5 with the 4800MQ and the 780M. Serves me well with the games I play (dota2, cs:go, elite dangerous). It is great bringing the laptop with me when I'm on my long business trips, and also helps that it looks amazing just laying around.

Great to see Alienware put stronger hardware in their products to meet the needs of their niche market! There will always be people who don't understand that buying a product is not always about the specs and real world performance. Emotions play a big part, especially in regards to an iconic brand such as Alienware, and the feeling that comes with owning one is worth the price alone.

But not everyone wants a desktop I know many people who don't and frankly that's an irrelevant argument. Just because it not much of an option on laptops doesn't mean it shouldn't exist.

Also the performance in terms of gaming is closer then ever as the nvida mobile house are comparable to the desktop performance

Always, any thread about them is just like that

And yet i had amazing support from dell/alienware over the years, including next day engineers in timed slots

Not that that would happen that soon as i wouldnt ever game on a laptop as the desktop experience is superiour anyways.

A desktop is also an INFERIOR experience for portability

Pros and cons my friend

And some of us happily game on laptops (and I already own a gaming desktop..so..)

IPS 1440P 144hz bruh, now show me a laptop with that.

Even if it was 4K? How is 4K 60FPS subpar experience then 1080P 60FPS? You can build a desktop with two 980Ti's for the cheapest Alienware 18 option and still have some cash left over.
