NVIDIA Launches The GeForce GTX 950 [With Updated Reviews & Benchmarks]

The new budget-oriented graphics card has arrived. GeForce GTX 950 is new model based on Maxwell architecture, featuring 768 CUDA cores and 2GB GDDR5 memory across 128-bit interface. It’s a proper GTX 750 Ti replacement, although it is being compared to GTX 650 by NVIDIA.

ASUS STRIX GTX 950 2GB (STRIX-GTX950-DC2OC-2GD5-GAMING)

ASUS STRIX is not exactly a copy of GTX 960. In fact it looks just like STRIX GTX 750, with DVI ports in the middle of the I/O bracket. Also the heat pipes are situated at the top, not at the bottom like on STRIX 960.

EVGA GTX 950 SuperClocked (SC) Mini (02G-P4-2951-KR)

This card has non-reference clocks at 1152/1342 MHz with memory clock at 6610 MHz.

As the name suggest Super-Super Clocked comes with very high frequencies out of the box. With base clock at 1190 MHz and boost clock at 1393 MHz, we might be looking at one of the fastest GTX950 cards around.

Can anyone explain it to me why they are comparing it to 600 series? I think there was similar thing with 970 or 980.

The reason why NVIDIA compared the 900 to the 600 series is because it was a full architectural jump - that was their logic at least. 700 series was still the same Kepler as the 600 series - even GK110 wasn't much different from GK104 and GK106. Only difference was more hardware. Underlying logic was all the same.

The reason why they compare it to the 650, if you ask me, is that if it were compared to the 750/750 Ti it would be a marginal performance increase at best.

It's to make people still on the 600 series upgrade. There's no point in upgrading the 750/750 Ti and Nvidia knows that.

Close, but not quite. The 750 Ti was a Maxwell based, GM107. I'd still imagine NVIDIA would rather compare Maxwell to Keplar than Maxwell to Maxwell.

My assumption is that consumers are more willing to skip a generation before upgrades, however. For example, moving from a 660 to a 760 wasn't a smart move because the 760 wasn't all that much more powerful, but from a 660 to a 960 does yield better results. NVIDIA is more likely to convince owners of the 650 to move to the 950 than they are owners of the still rather fresh 750 Ti.

That's what I said. It made a much more substantial difference comparing the 900 series to the 600 series.

Kinda off topic but in that pic of the testbench they placed the motherboard on top of an anti-static bag .Now from what I've herd the outer surface of that bag gathers static.

Not terribly excited for this product but I would like to see the performance per watt compared to the 750ti. 750ti was a very interesting card imo because the power draw and thermal output was so incredibly low for the performance you could get out of it.

That looks like pretty nice performance out of a 50 series card, to mostly be around the performance of the 760 when the 760 was pretty strong for a 60 series card in its generation. Of course at $150 I'd pay the extra $30 for a 960 though, but when this drops to $130 or so it'll be a really nice buy.

Meh. Why buy a GTX x50 every year when you can just get a 970 for the next 3 years.
