Content editors, designers and engineers take note - Intel is bringing the power of Intel® Xeon® processors  to notebook PCs in a perfect balance between power and mobility. Designed from the ground up for mobile workstations, the Intel® Xeon® processor E3-1500M v5 product family, based on architecture code-named Skylake, brings high precision computing horsepower to a notebook and supports key features like error-correcting code memory for enhanced reliability while running critical workstation applications. The new products will be available with certified drivers for key engineering applications and support the unique hardware-assisted security, manageability and productivity capabilities of Intel® vPro™ technology. Mobile workstations featuring Intel Xeon processors as well as Thunderbolt ™ 3 technology will be available this fall. More information on the Intel® Xeon® processor E3-1500M v5 product family will be available soon. Content creators, designers and engineers get ready for more power and mobility.

At Intel, we’ve been working closely with PC companies for years to deliver high performance workstations that deliver the computing demands of designers, content creators, engineers and architects. If you fall in this camp, you understand that not just any PC will do. You need the right mix of processor performance, memory, graphics and storage that lets you create, test, and deliver solutions. With the increasing popularity of digital creation (4K videos, digital design etc.), more creative professionals and engineers are seeing a need for workstation class capabilities in a portable device. In fact, IDC’s most recent report on mobile workstation usage showed that the quarter ending in June 2015 was the sixth straight quarter of year-over-year mobile workstation unit growth[1].

That’s why Intel is excited to announce plans to bring the power of Intel® Xeon® processors to notebook PCs for the first time. Designed for the professional who needs workstation-class capabilities in a portable device, Intel will soon be launching the Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1500M v5 Product Family. This family of processors are based on the next gen Skylake architecture and they will deliver high precision computing horsepower in notebook form factors, delivering the right balance of power and mobility. Intel Xeon-based mobile workstations will have key features such as error-correcting code memory that automatically detects and repairs errors on-the-fly that cause data corruption and system crashes for peace-of-mind reliability. These new systems will also enjoy the benefits of the unique hardware-assisted security, manageability, and productivity capabilities of Intel vPro™ Technology. Mobile workstations featuring Intel Xeon will also feature Thunderbolt™ 3 – the USB-C that does it all. And if that’s not enough, Intel will also provide certifications for applications in computer-aided design and engineering, and digital content creation.

This is just scratching the surface of what to expect from the Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1500M v5 Product Family for mobile workstations. We’re not quite ready to unveil all the details, but as you can see there is a lot for content creators, designers and engineers to get excited about. how the hell will they cool it and how big of a battery they can fit it with to actually worth the investment

ah .. forgot, it will have Thunderbolt - you know, the "thing" Apple abandoned with their very recent laptop lineup

Oh well, I was expecting something like an e3 1230 v3 on a laptop (like a 4790), but this is nice too.

We already have desktop class CPUs in laptops. This isn't surprising.

Eurocom has stuffed a 4960x into a laptop and I think they have a xeon option

they have been doing it for years, they even joke about battery life on their laptops

 If batteries were better there would be no desktops and phones hooked to cloud computers would be what everyone uses until then. High performance laptops suck for battery life

my concern is there any IGPU? or GPU running constantly? good bye battery. but then relized this is super high end xeons, so most likely plugged into a wall all the time anyway.

For all the people asking "but why?", this is probably more for "mobile workstations", those really thick "laptops". I doubt this is really intended for the average consumer who needs power.

This sort of power in a laptop form factor makes more sense if the workstation has to be moved around a lot, certainly easier than lugging around a tower.

Same question. In what circumstance would you need that kind of power, in that format, in such a way that it would be less efficient than to walk back to a legitimate workstation that won't suffer from some kind of thermal throttling or power consumption problems?

 

Because my brother in law has a 3k dual quadro(i believe), 32gb ram laptop for work. when your loading a entire car, every single bolt, in cad software, you need a bit of processing power. and you can't exactly bring a tower to work everyday. 

 

Same question as above. If you're working in that kind of situation, what kind of half-assed company are you working for that doesn't provide a legitimate workstation for that purpose?

As for Thunderbolt, it was made by Intel, so of course they won't abandon it like Apple (although it's a dumb standard).

Thunderbolt is very much still alive in macbook pro. Let's be real if you expect a core-M cpu with thunderbolt.

 

Workstation mobile is an invaluable tool to have to those working on-site like engineers an architects.

Reliability and lower power consumption are the main benefits of Xeons. And please tell me how an APU would make sense in a workstation laptop which needs a very strong CPU and dGPU to be of any use?
