You forgot to add this part,

"They add that they will do this when they need to comply with law enforcement, prevent spam, maintain the security of their networks, or protect their rights or property."

Pretty much every company has the exact same thing.

Telemetry data is fully anonymous. Microsoft doesn't care what you do. What they care is what people have has setup:

Stuff like:

 - % of Windows users on laptops/desktops/tablet running their OS, to know what to optimize/work on the most for the next version.

 - Percentage of users with multiple monitor setups, and how many monitors

 - Percentage of users with these hardware specs of higher

 - How many time "Media Center" is lunched

 - How people are switching between applications the most

and so on and so forth.

This was introduced since Windows XP, and usually Microsoft is pretty open about it. Microsoft was very open about it with Windows 8 development, showing Windows 7 user data on its blog.

Then why does it directly state "we will access disclose, and preserve personal data including emails, or files in private folders"?

Also, worth pointing out that IBM is switching off of Windows, to apple (which doesn't make sense to me, but is still noteworthy)

http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/IBM-will-Windows-Rechner-von-Lenovo-durch-Macs-ersetzen-2767208.html

Yes the information is not PII (Personally identifiable information)

I would recommend watching this video:

Companies actually prefer data that isn't PII as it can't be subpoenaed by the courts because that's a huge hassle for them.

Furthermore as it has been said previously, a lot of technological advances we want in OS require user feedback. Unfortunately it's a huge hassle to fill out a survey so I can understand why co. would want this type of info. This isn't just big brother trying to screw us over.

From my POV some none PII data in exchange for a 100 dollar + OS is  much better deal than having to pay cash or dealing with questionable torrents. It's g8 m8, I don't have to pirate windows no more.

Personally, I have an account that I have done just for Windows 8/OneDrive/Grove Music streaming subscription/Office 365, etc.

I have done it not for privacy, but rather for security purposes. (reduces potential being hacked). Then in Outlook (office software), I have my actual e-mails, and use that. I also don't save my credit card info (I don't do this for all sites, regardless who they are)

I´ve been using the "windows live mail" since MSN went down.

Does it work with Win10 ?

Windows 10 has a Mail app which works with all services, and you can add multiple accounts.

If that is you wonder.

eh not really, i was wondering if "Windows Essentials" (that includes Windows Live mail) itself worked on Win10.

Just use it for DX12 games, that's it. Use Win 7 64-bit for everything else.

Oh! Well I didn't try it, but I do have Windows Photo Gallery that comes with it that I installed and works great under Windows 10.

So I don't see why not.

Just be sure to do a custom install uncheck remove OneDrive, because it is integrated in Windows and it will just screw things up.

There is a part in the terms and conditions of windows 10 that says "we will access, disclose and preserve personal data", including the contents of emails or files in private folders."

Here is away to stop this and to become private within windows again

In my personal opinion no company should have access to 'private' data that you do not want them to ,only the things you do not mind being shared.

anyway the article:     http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/windows-10-spying-how-to-opt-out-of-microsofts-intrusive-terms-of-use-10432300.html

This applies mostly to Microsoft's Outlook Email Service, complying with legal requirements (e.g. if law enforcement wanted access to an individuals' search history etc.)

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/privacystatement/default.aspx See section "Reasons We Share Personal Data", 3 boxes down

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/servicesagreement/

TL;DR if you do legal stuff on your computer, there is nothing to worry about, meaning microsoft has no reason to want to access your data in the first place. IMO this privacy and windows 10 stuff is ridiculous - as if every other big company doesn't do this already anyway.

People who are not signing into their Microsoft accounts on your PCs for "privacy concerns" can expect an expensive future if you're investing into more Windows 10 PCs, you'll have to pay for each individual copy of Windows. People with a MS account use 1 account and 1 key to activate all their systems - as long as only 1 system is on at a time.

It's completely blown out of proportion. Also if you're the least bit worried about data gathering then you should go live in a cave a 1000Km from the nearest establishment simply because every device and every entity gathers information these days. In the current era privacy is just fallacy and nothing more.

It's not much use. Even if you opt out of it all, they still keep collecting your data anyway, they just don't use it for those purposes they have mentioned (targeted advertising etc.), since data is too valuable to go to waste.

What if I told you every mainstream phone OS does that, not just Android. And VPNs won't hide your traffic from say for example your ISP, because they have to know what they are serving you in the first place. If they didn't know anything, they could not provide their service for you. It's like ordering a pizza to be delivered on your doorstep without you telling your address.

Preeeetty sure they do. Unless ISPs can decrypt traffic on the fly, they can't see what it is. All they know is "this garbled mess of a packet wants to go here, that wants to go there", not "this part of a pornhub video wants to go here, that part of a torrent file wants to go there". Pretty sure.

The ONLY thing I found that could be immediatly bad is sharing your location. Location section is the second one down under General under the privacy setting. By default, all the apps have location turned off except for Cortana. Maps also has location on but only your location history.

I actually don't care if apps and microsoft know things like my name, what I click on, how I type, and some other things. I would actually want them to know so that they can make my experience better.

If microsoft was taking my pictures and selling them or someone was personally reviewing them well, that's a different story. The other stuff if just giving some info to make the apps know you and work better for you.

I want Cortana to understand my voice and other things better, I don't mind if she knows things about me from my email. I like that she can notify me of things before I tell her to. I want apps to know who I am so that I don't have to manually put that info in every time which I would have done anyway.

If anyone can tell me of another thing that is collected that you think is bad and why I would be happy to know so I can turn it off.
