One question, though: Isn't lower ASIC quality better for water, dry ice, or other forms of exotic cooling, and higher is better for air cooling. And since these cards are generally meant for exotic cooling, why isn't extremely low quality expensive too?

Doesn't Gigabyte have something similar like this for a while? My G1 Gaming 970 has what they call "GPU Gauntlet" where they bin GPUs specifically for overclocking.

Most companies do that anyway, if a company has several models they'll put the better chips in the high end cards. 

EVGA will put their best chips in the classified cards, Zotac will put their best chips in the AMP extreme cards, Galax/KFA2 will put their best chips in the HOF, Asus will put their best chips in the matrix cards, ect...

As far as I know from this forum and other forums; the Asic quality dictates the voltage capability.  Lower quality means leakier voltage which is better for pushing the limits like with LN2 or some water loops.  The tighter the Asic quality the less leaky the voltage which means it is better for the cooler that comes with it, or WC'ing it.  Lower is better on water, and higher is better on air, while the lowest(50% and downward) is best for LN2.  Only reason the lower quality Asic is cheaper, may be because a custom-loop builder will be shelling out money out the wazoo to begin with, and EVGA is considerate.  Where-as people wanting to keep to air cooling have to shell out more.  It's a conspiracy to take down air cooling, and replace it all with frosty the snowman.  Dear lord.  ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

It's not that simple, as the ole silicon lottery is still very important. It mostly helps with voltages, and it being lower can help with water and LN2 since the card usually runs a bit hotter then.

(They only have so many gpus and they are not going to send any back so the non-special ones get relegated to the "regular" offerings.)

I doubt very many people will be buying the Kingpin cards so I doubt they are reserving ALL of the good chips and the rest of their cards get shitty ones.

not all, but if those follow a normal distribution and they reserve even half or 1/4th of the cards for that purpose it's a significant loss to the average card.

Normally I would expect a review to put em to the test and such but this might be a bit too difficult: First it has to be bought cards since requesting  a sample from EVGA would no doubt get you a cherry picked version anyway even if you get the basic 980ti version no bells and whistles. Second, just comparing one is no guarantee so it has to be multiple cards.

 

Last but not least, there needs to be validation on all of the different tier levels. So we're talking about dropping a good 20 or 30 grand on cards just for a review, I don't think there's a reviewer large enough to absorb that or make it back with just youtube views.

 

So if you think about it it really is just a leap of faith EVGA is asking from you, not very scientific and sorry but nope, don't trust em enough.

Eh for 98% of normal gamers like myself this just means I spend less ony my GPU than the people who are happy to risk their GPU and increasing their electricity bill for the sake of 3-5 FPS.

Very nice, anything 70% or more is pretty decent really. And you reach 1550+ game stable or just benches?

I've played cs:go with uncapped frame rate and it's been at 1557 to 1559, but for some reason it kept on crashing (only in csgo. Every other game, Bioshock Infinite, Sniper Elite, etc, was stable). So I tuned it down to 1520 or something.

Msi doesn't even have any binned cards for the 900 series.

You say what's the point but there's plenty of other "what's the point?" questions, what's the point in spending hundreds more for a card that might overclock better? What's the point in buying anything other than reference if 90% of the cards out there are topping out at around the same area? What's the point in buying a K|NGP|N card when a classified is going to perform just as well for less money? What's the point in buying a card that's been binned to allow me to push it maybe 10-20MHz higher?

 

It hasn't hurt anyone any more than binning has. High end cards have always had the better chips, yes EVGA has more versions of their high end cards, it doesn't change anything, even if they weren't doing this they'd still hold those chips back for their classified cards anyway.

 

 

MSI doesn't have any binned cards for the 900 series yet because they didn't want a repeat of the 700 series (780 lightning drops then the Ti drops), we'll see one in the next few months.
